watch to make sure its not splintering or big pieces are breaking off. if he swallows them it can become lodged in the digestive tract or even cut it open 4/8/2007 9:05:44 PM |

My dog just got into our leftovers and ate a rib bone...I took about half of it away but he had already eaten the other half. They were cooked. I've been reading about how it can be dangerous for larger dogs who don't chew it into tiny pieces. Anyone have any idea how dangerous it is considering the circumstances? 6/28/2007 11:02:37 PM |

you should never let a dog chew on a cooked bone. A cooked bone becomes very brittle and can break off into small sharp pieces that can become lodged in your dog's digestive tract (as mentioned). You shouldn't do it, or supervise them very closely. 6/28/2007 11:33:09 PM |

My little beagle eats rib bones all the time, he's not too much bigger than Major. I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

as a general rule stay away from poultry/fish bones and you're good, as far a splintering goes
I did have a friend whose dog got a hambone (one of the round 'eye' ones) stuck in its system for a few days.....and mine will try to prematurely swallow big bone pieces if other dogs are around. 6/29/2007 10:22:50 AM |
