^^ You probably have to claim just the damaged components.

If you are able to file do not write just a price, it will be much easier to get money back if you are as detailed as possible. Assuming your PC is several years old most of the parts probably won't even be available. List the exact item name if you can with the price you would've paid when you bought it new. If it is something general then write "high end PC gaming RAM 16 GB - 100$", etc.

Is a GTX 1060 with 6 GB of memory for $200 or less too much to ask for?

So as folks are upgrading their systems, I am in the market for fairly modern hardware to update my 2008-era desktop.

new build is done. should last another 5 years like the last.

ryzen 7 1700X @4.1ghz (ended up being cheaper than the 1700 with the bundle at microcenter)
asrock taichi
gskill ripjaws V 32gb 3200mhz
intel 600p 512gb nvme
1080ti armor oc @1900mhz
lg 27" 4k

everything else I reused from my old machine

and unfortunately, I had to switch from my coolermaster nepton 240m to a corsair h110i gt because it's in violation of a patent and won't be getting an AM4 adapter :-\

600p was ~$135
board was $85 after rebate/bundle
cpu was $369
gpu was $720
ram was $240
new water cooler was $125
monitor was $330

So $2000. The psu, case, and soundcard are probably about $300 worth and then I have 3 other older SSDs in it.

I'm selling my 970gtx, nepton 240m, and 8150/16gb ddr3/m5a97 evo (PM if interested) for probably about $400 so I figure about a 1600 net before tax. I wasn't planning on a monitor, but my old monitor had other ideas..

Alright it was time to retire my i7-950@3.8ghz that I've been using since 2010.

Picked up a i7-7700k, 16GB of ddr4, and an Asus Rog Strix for ~$615 from Micro Center last night.

Was able to re-use everything else (case, psu, noctua nh-d14 cooler, ssd, and oc'd 980 ti).

Stock 4.2gz turbo 4.5gz.

When are these Monopoly money miners going to stop driving the price on video cards up?

I was going to build a PC this spring but decided wait on the Vega cards to compare them. Should have just built it then.

^^^That's not a bad deal. Although the i7-7700 is $289 right now. I got the k version for $299. With how super easy it is to OC the newer chips it's a shame not to get the unlocked version.

Since I can't get a mid range card for a decent price I figured screw it I'll go high end. Any glaring weaknesses or bottlenecks in this? I don't need a PSU or a large storage HDD because I have them already.

Also can't seem to make my wish list public.

if you're building a new machine, there's absolutely no reason to buy a sata ssd. go nvme for the same money and 300+% performance.

[Edited on August 23, 2017 at 8:35 AM. Reason : also, that card is THREE slots for not any perf improvement over any of the other non-FE Tis]

Good call on the SSD. Never used nvme so wasn't familiar with it.

As for the card, does it taking 3 slots matter if I'm not planning on SLI? I guess I could future proof just in case.

case airflow and if you plan on using a pcie slot in the future for more nvme disks or maybe a sound or capture card.

it looks like the prices on everything are fucked due to miners, as the card I bought 7 months ago is now $50 more than I paid so that might be a decent deal. I'd just get the cheapest with 2 or 3 fans and a back plate

i have that case and love it, it's so quiet

it doesn't look like you would lose pcie slots with the way they are laid out on that motherboard. i wouldn't worry too much about airflow, that case lets you add fans all over it

it looks like he'd lose his pcie-1x slot in the middle. that's what my SBZ is connected to. probably a non-issue since you have another, but why lose a slot if you don't have to?

Yeah I switched it out to a thinner one that's also $10 cheaper. I doubt the space will ever be an issue but better to have extra space and never need it than need it and not have it.

4 years later, it's time to rebuild.

ryzen 5950x
asrock taichi x570
64gb of gskill ddr4 3600
re-using the intel nvme
adding a 2TB sata ssd for vm storage
seasonic tx-1000 prime
re-using my sbz
re-using my old mellanox 10g NIC
re-using corsair h110i
finally got a new case after 10 years - fractal design define r6 usb-c
lg ultrahd bluray burner
nvidia a6000 (for windows)
nvidia rtx4000 (for linux vm)

I needed a new laptop for work, but hate switching between 2 machines all day so I'm just upgrading to be able to run a vm without compromising my main OS performance

for the first time ever I'm building myself a proper high-end desktop. Last time I even had a desktop was a Dell Precision WorkStation 690 I got at my first software developer job in 2007 that they let me keep when they ran out of money and couldn't pay me anymore. I upgraded components in it a few times till I sold it for parts in 2013. I also built a few small HTPCs/media servers back in the day but stopped bothering with those once streaming services and cloud storage became mainstream and reliable. But other than that, never built a full desktop from scratch. In 2021 I considered building one of my kids a custom gaming machine for his birthday, but ended up going with a prebuilt Alienware, which has worked out pretty well. Last year I bought another Alienware on a black friday deal for one of the other kids.

But this year it's my turn. I was lamenting that every laptop I've owned in the last 10+ years has had the same 16GB RAM, even the $2k+ Thinkpad X1 Nano I bought in 2021. Plus, I'm itching to play around with more ML stuff again so it's about time I get an actual graphics card (although the cloud options are pretty solid these days)

Getting up to speed on the latest tech was easier than I thought it would be considering I haven't paid super close attention in a long time to the yearly progress on component technologies. But between all the youtube channels dedicated to PC building, pcpartpicker.com and /r/buildapc, I quite enjoyed myself. And this is what I'm going with

CPU: Intel Core i7-13700K 3.4 GHz 16-Core Processor ($415.73 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X73 73.11 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($184.99 @ Best Buy)
Motherboard: MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX LGA1700 Motherboard ($269.99 @ B&H)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws S5 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR5-6000 CL32 Memory ($234.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Crucial P5 Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive ($131.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: MSI GAMING X TRIO GeForce RTX 4090 24 GB Video Card ($1642.13 @ Amazon)
Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case ($103.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: MSI A1000G PCIE5 1000 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($199.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $3183.80

looking forward to putting my new toy together

I figured it would be fine to start. I generally haven't bothered with RAID if that's what you mean, and it's less a concern for SSDs anyhow. I don't anticipate using up the 2 TB anytime soon, and if I do, guess I'll just either add a big secondary SATA drive, or even get a 4/8 TB SSD and give the 2TB to one of the kids (who only have 500GB/1 TB drives)

Have an ADA6000 coming and had to swap out both my samsung ssds because they were garbage and died. Replaced them with a 4tb gen4 nvme and 4tb sata of microcenter brand. Got a 4k 48" oled 120hz monitor to use the new gpu. I think I'll leave cpu alone until 7000 or 8000 threadripper

Built a new server
ryzen 5700g
gigabyte aorus elite b550
32gb gskill ddr3600
rtx4000
the seasonic tx1000 from my previous build (died and I replaced it while waiting for rma)
dell hba
10x 14tb ironwolf drives
some inland 512gb sata ssd for cache
mellanox 10g fiber card

Oh nice just saw your post earlier.

I built one in 2020 with my old i7 7700k, 64gb DDR4. It's got 2x 1TB nvmes for an apps/vm/etc cache pool. Then I have a downloads 1tb ssh cache pool. Then 6x18tb Exos drives for 72tb with dual parity.

I've got the whole SWAG stack for reverse proxy for a variety of services. Just started messing with tdarr for some old tv show transcoding.

It's certainly easy to use, and has a great community.

now I gotta deal with rma

I probably hurt the cpu by running it warm for months. It appears my liquid freezer was defective though just outside the official recall window and when I looked at temps closely while troubleshooting my issue, it was spiking to 90 regularly. Shame to do all this just to keep working, and I'm going to rebuild the whole thing in a couple months when TR7000 is out
