Here's a short podcast from NPR on calls for an "internet code of conduct." It's a good discussion on issues we face here.

What I don't like is the emphasis placed on moderators deleting and editing offensive content. People should be responsible for what they post. 4/19/2007 3:48:50 PM |

Since we're communicating over the internet, it's very difficult to convey emotion.
If I type something civil like, "Well, I disagree..." it comes off as weak. If we were in person you would see that my voice is raised, and I'm punctuating words with pointed fingers and other hand gestures. Or you might see that I got my sassy tone on, and I see right through your bullshit. But on the internets, there's no oomph to what we type. One way to add that oomph is with profanity, obscene and outlandish suggestions, and personal attacks.
I'm kinda serious about this. 4/25/2007 1:03:00 PM |

The irony, of course, is that much of the most disgusting, virulent stuff-- not only in bloggers' comment fields, but also by bloggers and their approved guest bloggers-- comes from the hard-Left. Michelle Malkin and has some interesting thoughts on this topic.4/28/2007 8:29:18 AM |

Yeah. That pretty much sums it up. If you had to talk to somebody in person, a lot of the personal attacks would disappear.4/28/2007 10:56:36 PM |

^That makes me wonder, though. Do people mean most of the insults that they say on the internet, or is it just e-game? Like, do people say the things that they really want to say but normally can't because they don't want to do any serious/actual damage, or do they say it just because the anonymity of the internet allows them to do so?
But maybe I've answered my own question. A person tends to show their true colors when presented with the opportunity to act badly in some sort of way and never have to pay the consequences for it. 4/28/2007 11:30:04 PM |

If we only said what we'd say in person, the internet would be boring because the emotion that we added in person wouldn't be there.
So you gotta add emotion with crazy shit to make things interesting. 4/28/2007 11:50:39 PM |

If the above quotes fit your definition of disgusting and virulent, then you may have more concerns than just the hard left.
As for Malkin, she is one of the more virulent commentators in the media, if I understand your definition correctly. 4/30/2007 12:22:18 PM |
caesar Veteran 224 Posts user info edit post |
I guess by virulent and disgusting, I do mean comments that suggest that "if a woman makes an argument I disagree with, then obviously she needs to get laid (or deserves worse)" or logic similar to that...things that do not have anything to do with intellectual discourse. And Malkin, though controversial at times, is certainly no Ann Coulter (who is arguably offensive, if you don't appreciate her brand of satire).

I didn't mean to imply that she should get laid because I disagree with her arguments.
I think she should get laid because she is virulent, but not so disgusting. 5/1/2007 5:25:05 PM |
