" Giuliani warns of 'new 9/11' if Dems win
By: Roger Simon
April 24, 2007 09:07 PM EST

MANCHESTER, N.H. - - Rudy Giuliani said if a Democrat is elected president in 2008, America will be at risk for another terrorist attack on the scale of Sept. 11, 2001.

But if a Republican is elected, he said, especially if it is him, terrorist attacks can be anticipated and stopped.

“If any Republican is elected president - - and I think obviously I would be the best at this - - we will remain on offense and will anticipate what (the terrorists) will do and try to stop them before they do it,” Giuliani said.

The former New York City mayor, currently leading in all national polls for the Republican nomination for president, said Tuesday night that America would ultimately defeat terrorism no matter which party gains the White House.

“But the question is how long will it take and how many casualties will we have?” Giuliani said. “If we are on defense (with a Democratic president,) we will have more losses and it will go on longer.”

“I listen a little to the Democrats and if one of them gets elected, we are going on defense,” Giuliani continued. “We will wave the white flag on Iraq. We will cut back on the Patriot Act, electronic surveillance, interrogation and we will be back to our pre-Sept. 11 attitude of defense.”

He added: “The Democrats do not understand the full nature and scope of the terrorist war against us.”

After his speech to the Rockingham County Lincoln Day Dinner, I asked him about his statements and Giuliani said flatly: "America will safer with a Republican president."

Giuliani, whose past positions on abortion, gun control and gay rights have made him anathema to some in his party, believes his tough stance on national defense and his post-Sept. 11 reputation as a fighter of terrorism will be his trump card with doubting Republicans.

“This war ends when they stop coming here to kill us!” Giuliani said. “Never ever again will this country ever be on defense waiting for (terrorists) to attack us if I have anything to say about it. And make no mistake, the Democrats want to put us back on defense!”

Giuliani said terrorists “hate us and not because of anything bad we have done; it has nothing to do with Israel and Palestine. They hate us for the freedoms we have and the freedoms we want to share with the world.”

Giuliani continued: “The freedoms we have are in conflict with the perverted, maniacal interpretation of their religion.” He said Americans would fight for “freedom for women, the freedom of elections, freedom of religion, and the freedom of our economy.”

Addressing the terrorists directly, Giuliani said: “We are not giving that up and you are not going to take it from us!”

The crowd thundered its approval.

Giuliani also said that America had been naïve about terrorism in the past and had missed obvious signals.

“They were at war with us before we realized it, going back to 90s with all the Americans killed by the PLO and Hezbollah and Hamas,” he said. “They came here and killed us in 1993 (with the first attack on New York’s World Trade Center killing six people) and we didn’t get it. We didn’t get it that this was a war. Then Sept. 11, 2001 happened and we got it.”"

Thats a misleading title of a misleading article.

Nowhere in his speech did he warn of another 9/11 if a Democrat is elected. He said that Republicans are more aggressive in fighting terrorism, and that correspondingly the country is safer with a Republican president.

I disagree with those assertions, but there is no blatant fearmongering in anything he said.

OK, nice rebuttal.

Being tough on terrorism is a big part of his platform. Just like combating global warming and poverty are a big part of any democrat's platform. If you want to define what he said as fearmongering, then every politician is guilty of it in some form.

i think all this is about, is that Rudy is seeing his numbers sink and the core base (GOP primary voters) less than enthusiastic about his campaign.

so he decided to lead early and strong with his only trump card.

it's a move of desperation.

So he's saying that if a Democrat is elected, some semblance of civil rights and privacy will be returned to the White House?

I think it's time that both parties move beyond using 9/11 as a campaign crutch. Yes it was a horrible time in our history, but it's behind us. Instead of harping on how bad it was and how it's going to happen again if we don't keep "on the offensive", how about we try to look to the future and figure out ways to actually stop the terrorists from becoming terrorists in the first place. Killing people and sending in more troops isn't going to help, I think we've figured that out already (well, the sensible folks have at least).

I tell you what...if you find a candidate that can remove centuries of ingrained hate from the radical Muslim culture, I'll fall over my own feet running to vote for them. I don't care if they're Democrat, Republican, or fucking Martian. Here's a hint:

A lot of the hate that America has directed towards it (pre- and post-Iraq) is jealousy of the vast material well being and prosperity of the people. This prosperity is in large part due to the freedoms we enjoy. Even now you can go to a lot of countries were the majority of people will say the hate America, but given the chance they would live here in a heartbeat. That is pretty fucked up if you think about it.

But no matter how many times you repeat that, it doesn't make it true. Even if Bush says it, it doesn't make it true.

Have you actually asked people who hate America why they hate it?

WHO HERE HAS? My guess: no one.

So now, I could say [/thread] and be done with it, but I will go one step further:

Why don't the people who supposedly hate the US because of its meaterial wealth as you say, not hate Canada, Germany, France, Switzerland, Sweden, or a whole bunch of other countries, some far richer than the US.

Once you have talked to the people on the street, then you may say something, otherwise, please don't.

And yes, I HAVE talked to thousands and asked them why they hate the US. And this includes Arabs, Asians, Europeans, Africans, Muslims, Non-Muslims.

Or just look up some of the tens of international multi-country surveys done in this regard.

Again, just because Bush says something, it doesn't make it true.

If someone says they hate something, from where and from whom will you find the reason for their hate?

we all know the closer it gets to the primaries, we will start seeing giuliani campaign commercials showing clips from 9/11, and that will be his entire platform. He wont speak of what hes going to do, he wont talk about domestic programs, healthcare, etc. Hes just going to talk about how "good of a job" he did during 9/11.

person: "Mr Giuliani, how do you plan to handle the crisis state our healthcare system has reached?"

Rudy: "Did you see how well I handled 9/11? Next Question"

Responses differ for different nationalities/religions, but typically revolve around the same issues:

responses of arabs and muslims who hate the US: (which is to say, most Arabs and Muslims)

Americans occupy our lands and kill our children.
They are not fair brokers in the Israeli-Palestinian problem.
They are pro-Israeli.
They support dictators in our countries when it suits them.
etc
etc

responses of europeans who hate the US: (anti-Americanism seems to be growing there)

Americans are arrogant and too proud.
Americans are blindly nationalistic.
Americans are ignorant and uncultured.
They only respond to international situations when it benefits them.
etc
etc

- you kill your own children too when you blow yourselves up...at least we dont kill them on purpose

They are not fair brokers in the Israeli-Palestinian problem.

- Life isnt fair, and wouldnt you support the side thats, I dunno, not trying to murder you all the time?

They are pro-Israeli.

- Yeah because they dont try to blow up all our shit all the time and declare jihads on us

They support dictators in our countries when it suits them.

- You support killing our president, who gives a fuck what you think about our opinions on your leaders

etc
etc

responses of europeans who hate the US: (anti-Americanism seems to be growing there)

Americans are arrogant and too proud.

- They're just jealous of our freedom...either that or that ignorant answer shows how arrogant and proud they are about their OWN countries

Americans are blindly nationalistic.

- I'll bet it was a Brit who said that wasnt it...still mad about us leaving to create a better country?

Americans are ignorant and uncultured.

- That statement is ignorant and uncultured

They only respond to international situations when it benefits them.

- And? Name me something you do in your life that doesn't benefit you, even indirectly

sounds like a bunch of stupid fucking reasons to me...they probably think "all Americans" are all like the few Americans they've ever actually met, or perhaps they think "all Americans" are like the people they see on tv

i am not arguing whether those reasons are valid or not, and whether they make sense to an american or not.

all i am saying is that THOSE are their reasons... and not

well i was simply addressing each one

the reasons are mostly stupid and unfounded

sounds to me like if they hate the US for those reasons, they are the ignorant and uncultured ones

and if they think Americans are "too proud" it sounds like they DO hate our freedom...we are proud to be citizens of the best country in the world...what the fuck do they know about it?

why someone says they hate something != why they really do

I know, its a hard concept to grasp but please try. I doubt anyone you walk up to on the street is going to be like "Fuck yea man, I hate America because they have all this shit I don't and I want their shit" Who is going to say that?

Hell look at the French, they have hated America for decades. Why? Because they have these sense of entitlement to being a world power that their country is no longer. So what do they do? They lash out at America because it DOES have the power that they want but can't have.

That's a different hatred. And not really a hatred, but jealousy.

No matter what you call it, that kind of hatred/jealousy compelling people to kill and blow themselves up is illogical.

The hatred that compels you to blow yourself up is the one that is a lot more prevalent.

You can't just deny that 100s of millions of people hate the US because of its military actions and because of it siding with Israel no matter what.

Again, you didn't answer my question:

Why don't these people hate, for example, Switzerland, Singapore, Sweden, etc, if it is because of material reasons as you say? Why aren't terrorists killing people from these countries or blowing themselves up there?

And here is a new one:

Why don't they hate UAE? Because it is a Muslim/Arab country? UAE is far richer than most countries of the world, and in some aspects is more developed than the US. Why aren't terrorists blowing up/trying to kill UAE/people from UAE?

Quote :
"why someone says they hate something != why they really do"

And that's quite rich... so you can now read people's minds?

I mean, either we believe people why they do things, or we make up any reason in our minds (or have Bush/Guiliani/Blair make up a reason and then convince the millions of sheep).

That's a nice cop out.

I will tell you why you think the way you do... doesn't matter what you say!!! You hate me because I have more things!!!

Using that reasoning in life (that you can make up your own reasons for why people do/think things), you can destroy everything.... is that how you would act in a friendship, in the family, or in marriage? YOU will tell people you know the reasons for their thoughts and actions? And really, it is a form of deception (to yourself), denial, and arrogance. I know why people do things, nobody needs to tell me, not even them! Har har....

There isn't a smiley that I can use that would be apt here.

Seriously, show me a country with the power to, that DOESN'T do that to benefit them.

on the contrary, it takes only a fair amount of intelligence to see through the republicans' smoke and mirrors, with their fearmongering tactics to get the citizens to involuntarily cede more and more of our civil rights to an executive branch fixated solely on war profiteering.

while your response is a typical neo-con attempt to dismiss legitimate criticism of your party's fundamental failure to hold true to their own historic values.

your problem with his comment is not so much rooted in its intelligence or lack therof, but that "Brevity is the Soul of Wit" ... and the incisive sarcasm cuts right to the heart of your beloved neo-con agenda, exposing its rotten core as it continues to eat its way from the inside out.

Do I think there will be another attack on the US? no doubt.

Do I think us fighting in iraq will prevent further attacks? Yes, I wont say that it will eliminate attacks on our soil, but they are busy fighting us overthere and are without the luxury/safety of planning for a major attack here. Most of the soilders ive talked to, believe that we are helping the iraqis and they want us there.

Either way, I think pulling out of iraq totally is a disaster now...but a scaled drawback doesnt seem like such a bad idea. I do think Rudy shouldnt have said this. It just looks desperate. Its the equiv. of the dems saying the repubs would take away all SS, and use fire hoses on blacks at polls. Its just stupid.

What I find very interesting is the reversal of roles between dems and republicans. In iraq, repubs are talking about continueing the aid, give them more time for them to step up. The dems however, say enough is enough, cut aid, let them sink or swim. In this country, the roles totally reverse when it comes to the welfare class. Interesting at least.
