however, not so exciting if you consider the fact that that we won't be able to develop the technology needed to get there in a few human lifetimes, for at least several centuries, if not several millenia, and if not never.

And then several genius families could be sent on a giant ship, they have kids, who are trained to be astronauts from birth, then they have kids, etc.

Be there in 200 years!

The only knowledge they would have of Earth would be what they learn in books, etc. and I would imagine radio contact with Earth would take a loooong time.

^^ true. and about radio contact, wouldn't it take 20 years for just a one-way message? have they thought about what to do with that problem? even if one day we could get humans to some planet outside our solar system, communication would take too long for it to be meanigful.

imagine someone sending a "LOL" and then scientists at earth waiting for 20 years for the message thinking it is important, and upon hearing it, either go into a maniacal laughter, or send a ship loaded with NUKULAR weapons to the planet

That's actually detimental to your message/cause!

The rate of development/technology is not linear wrt time, but exponential.

The technologies that will be developed from 2000 AD to 4000 AD will be FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR greater in quantity and quality than those developed from 0 AD to 2000 AD.

from the other thread:

Quote :
"When you assume that it's possible to travel faster than the speed of light, you're taking the laws of physics and punching them in the stomach and throwing them down the stairs. "

to quote something i had bookmarked when reading about speed of light / 'time travel' only a few months ago :

"When you assume that it's possible to travel faster than the speed of light, you're taking the laws of physics and punching them in the stomach and throwing them down the stairs."

"So you see when you start off - at zero speed (0% of speed of light) your time is just regular i.e. the time slowing factor (xt) is equal to 1. As you speed up your time runs slower by the factor shown on the y-axis. As you are approaching 100% of the speed of light your time slows more and more until it is infinitely slowed down. (You should realize that everything slows down including your heart beats, your thoughts, etc.) So for an example if your ship goes at 98% of the speed of light and you take a one year journey, when you return to Earth five years have gone by.

This region of speeds below 100% of the speed of light is the region of our regular time or Real Time.

Now say somehow you were able to go faster than the speed of light (i.e. the v in the above equation is now greater than c the speed of light). The equation will then give us a square root of a negative number on the right hand side (which is an imaginary number.) Well I can factor out the imaginary unit number (i or the square root of minus one) and plot the result on the same graph. This region I call Imaginary Time since it is some weird time with an imaginary unit attached to it (so I don't really know what this time means.)

However you see that time in this imaginary region will speed up from infinity to the regular time speed of 1 and continue speeding up. At 140% or higher speed of light, time slowdown factor is less than one, i.e. time will go faster than in the stationary frame! So for an example if your ship goes at 200% of the speed of light and you take a one year journey, when you return to Earth only about 7 months have gone by. However I need to stress again that this is just a crazy thought experiment which produces some weird imaginary time and has no physical meaning. "

wasnt trying to sound smart

/shrug

^i think i made it clear considering i actually put quotations around the information as well as said it came off of a site i had bookmarked and i obviously didnt create the pictures.

im also not saying anything in there is absolute fact. just something to think about. its not any huge scientific thing just a couple grad students' responses to a question about the speed of light.

It's suspected that the planet doesn't spin independently (because it's so big and so close to its star), so one side of the planet is always day, one side is always night, so that would also mean no summer/winter.

That supports my cause. You're saying "yeah, we've come far in the past 2000 years, but we'll go even farther in the next 2000" which is what I was trying to point out. 1/10th the speed of light is within the realm of possibility 2000 years from now (i think sooner, but whatev).

50 years ago, reputable scientists said it was "impossible" for humans to break the sound barrier.

yes, i know there's a significant difference between the nature of light and sound.

10 years ago, reputable scientists said it was "impossible" to ever break the 1GHz barrier for microprocessors.

..

i aint sayin we're gonna see anyone approach a significant fraction of the speed of light in our lifetime.

but i'm still skeptical of people who say "no way no how" with such certainty

..

i think i'll remain an agnostic on this issue for the time being.

^^^ i definitely understand your point. however scientists making claims that we would never break the sound barrier etc were pretty ignorant. i know hindsight is 20/20 but its the truth. light is different as so much truthful, visible physics is BASED on the speed of light thats its almost indescribable to think about even approaching the speed of light much less break it based on what we know about it whereas getting a faster microprocessor is on a much much larger scale. no huge laws of our universe are based on the speed of a microprocessor.

^ yeah, i agree with you exactly. the speed of sound, or even electron speeds across silicon junctions are kind of relative compared to the speed of light which is so fundamental to the structure of the universe ...

... at least as we currently understand it.

but im an agnostic who would like to put christians and atheists in a cage and watch them fight -- i might bet some money on one or the other, but not enought money to get me in trouble.

So theoretically if we were somehow able to reach the speed of light, since time slows down or whatever, would that mean that even though it seems to us that it is taking 20 years, would it seem to the astronauts onboard the spacecraft that it is taking less time?

maybe their planet isn't tilted... or maybe it doesn't rotate at all.
winter isn't cause ONLY by the earth rotating around the sun.

pfft..

Also... i know we've been blasting radio waves into space but... who says they hear audio on the same frequency band if there is life there... i mean our microwaves might be able to talk to them better than we can.

Actually the seasons aren't AT ALL caused by the rotation around the sun.

They are caused due to the 23.5 degree tilt (which you did mention).
