i'd like to free up some space on my laptop and put my music library on an external hard drive... is that a bad idea? could i play the music on the laptop straight from the external hard drive without any hitches?

Why not, but you'll just have to point your media player to the new location or have it scan for media again probably

i did that, itunes had no problem with it
