well, great. not only is the UN gonna ask us to wreck our economy for a non-existent problem, now they will ask us not to eat, as well. good work, people 5/5/2007 11:27:35 AM |

I would love to see how they're going to handle this one. You're not going to ask people to stop growing rice because, quite simply, it is one of the easiest grains to grow and is the staple grain for nearly half the planet. One of the big advantages is that with rice, you can get double the number of harvests each year that you would with other grains.
I suppose we could use genetic modifications to perhaps alter rice plants to reduce this affect. Oh but wait, GM is of the devil, so I guess we'll just have to tell people to stop growing rice and figure out something else to eat.
I'm waiting for them to discover that soy beans are a leading producer of global warming gases. That'll cause a few heads to explode. 5/6/2007 1:36:11 AM |

Even better. Now trees are contributing to global warming too:

I know that rationally, its more likely that the methane release equalizes the CO2 benefits, but its still a funny headline.

methane has been under suspicion as being the major greenhouse contributor for YEARS. i've heard that it was because of pig and cattle farms, but i never heard of rice being a contributor. it sounds like foxnews is just trying to severely discredit the idea of global warming because nobody in congress knows what the hell is going on. i don't know why this hasn't come up as an issue earlier. another link:

Fox news trying to discredit global warming? Next you'll tell me they have a well laid out political agenda and are performing a well orchestrated mis-information campaign directed at the American people. That's just crazy talk. 5/6/2007 11:08:30 PM |

Pretty interesting theory, given that the average temperature in the southern hemisphere hasn't noticeably changed in over 100 years. 5/18/2007 1:40:21 PM |

wow. just wow. and these idiots call themselves "scientists." Thank goodness they don't call themselves "logicians," because they committed one hell of a logical fallacy there.
1) They haven't proved that the ocean is sucking in less carbon. 2) Even if they had proved that the ocean was absorbing less carbon, they STILL HAVEN'T PROVED that man is responsible for the vast amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
Thus, they haven't "proven" shit about "Man's own actions."5/18/2007 8:00:46 PM |

Quote : | "The net quantity of carbon dioxide absorbed by the Southern Ocean remained at 0.3 billion tonnes a year from 1981 to 2004, according to calculations by the research team.
In 1981 it absorbed 0.6 billion tonnes from the atmosphere but emitted 0.3 billion tonnes back into it. In 2004 it absorbed 0.8 billion tonnes but emitted 0.5 billion tonnes. In the report they said that climate models project more intense Southern Ocean winds if CO2 levels continue to increase over the next century. " |
Wait, what? That article is misleading at best, borderline outright distortion. The net CO2 that can be absorbed has NOT changed! Yet they are arguing that the proportion has diminished! That is terrible science. The capacity for CO2 absorption hasn't changed, which indicates that their is some sort of maximum capacity of absorption. They knowingly make it sound like the amount the ocean can take in has changed, which it hasn't. The percentage of CO2 the oceans can retain has of course gone down, since there is more of it! This type of "finding" is why there are so many critics of the "global warming" bandwagon/political movement.
Evidently, the found that the ocean's absorbed the same amount of CO2, which sound is good. So they had to make it sound bad, so bam! The ocean is "is absorbing an ever-decreasing proportion of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere." Now it sounds doom and gloom so they can get more funding.5/19/2007 8:56:31 PM |
