http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/05/10/outsourcing.news.ap/index.html

So now they've gone as far as outsourcing local news reporters positions to India. First we couldn't understand WTF they were saying on the phone for tech support, now we won't have any idea WTF they're writing about in the news.

I think outsourcing local news coverage is going to be limited at best. In the end, you just have to be there, to be able to meet people in person to develop sources and investigate, in order to report an issue effectively.

So the "local" news is going to be all about the latest relationships in Bollywood instead of Hollywood now.

^^^ that chicka is HAWTTTTTTTTT

^^ i think he meant someone who has been writing fro 14 years

^ what does any of that have to do with the facts he said? it is a fact that more than 90% of all taxi drivers, construction laborers, and street cleaners in the ME are from 3 countries (india, pakistan, and bangladesh).

if you think that fact somehow cheapens the your image, well that's silly.

a fact is a fact.

How is that "slave" labor?

I take offense to the word "slave". Those might not be high-paying jobs, but they're earning comparable to someone else of their level of education. Not to mention that there is a FUCKING OBSCENE number of Egyptians in Saudi Arabia, who are not educated and do the same amount of labor intensive work. India's population is in billions, Egypt is like 100 million. Still, the difference in the number of "slaves" isn't much, which gives us another reason as to why those Arabs have to move to other countries to get work.

Also, you're a fucking dumbass if you're trying to rationalize any statement that includes the word "Paki" in it. As much as I would love to see a Pakistan-less world, those are the same Muslims who haven't directly attacked the US.

Not to mention that 98% of females in EGYPT were circumcised under pressure up until the late 90s. That figure is probably a shit ton higher for your Saudi Arabia.

^^

1) It is obvious to BLOODY EVERYBODY he didn't mean "slave" in the dictionary sense. There are barely any more real slaves left in the word. And he said "Mexican slave labor", so tell me, are the Mexicans really slaves in the US? Of course not, but some people may call it slave labour because they are paid peanuts, their rights are trampled on, and they have very little recourse to justice. The South Asian manual workers in the Gulf countries are in similar horrible conditions. The are paid very little, their wages are sometimes held for months, and they can't get justice, even though under the local laws, they do have rights.

2) I don't care if people say Paki. I don't associate myself with any country, and anybody who wants to be racist can go ahead. And BTW, he probably doesn't know that Paki is a derogatory term, otherwise he wouldn't have said it, I believe. And if you want a Pakistan-less world, why don't you go ahead and pray to Kali, and maybe your wish will come true.... BTW, how are the staged fake-encounter killings by the police coming along in Gujarat? So how many officers have been indicted, like 7 so far? For all your talk of human rights, fascism, and terrorism, you sure do seem to ingore it when it happens in your beloved motherland. Anyway, that's a separate topic, and I will not respond to it in this thread anymore. Feel free to make another thread if you desire.

3) Again, what does that have to do with outsourcing of jobs? And again, you conveniently ignore the massive human rights abuses that take place in your country, whether by individuals, or by the government. Again, this is a totally separate issue, and I will not engage in this here. Make a separate thread for bashing Arab/Muslim countries and their dismal human rights records, and for glorifying your country's glowing exemplary record.

They earn more than someone of their qualification would in their homeland. Hence, the concepts of labor supply and demand, and remittance.

Quote :
"their rights are trampled on"

That's true for just about anyone in the Middle East. Most of those countries are classified "Not Free" according to independent measures/scales. No freedom of religion is common in your homeland, too. Heck, you could be penalized for speaking against the Govt. in Egypt.

Quote :
"they have very little recourse to justice"

Basically, human rights are more like religious rights in the Middle East.

Quote :
"though under the local laws, they do have rights."

Local laws written by the same people who "exploit" these workers? ok

Quote :
"he probably doesn't know that Paki is a derogatory term"

What an ignorant dumbass.

Quote :
"why don't you go ahead and pray to Kali, and maybe your wish will come true"

Praying to Allah has more fruitful results when it comes to killing civilians/innocent people, though.

Quote :
"how are the staged fake-encounter killings by the police coming along in Gujarat?"

Thanks to democracy and freedom of press, you ACTUALLY get to hear the bad news...unlike, let's say, the MIDDLE FUCKING EAST. Hey wait, aren't non-muslims barred from entering Makkah? Or didn't about 2 dozen Christians get torched alive in Egypt a couple years ago?

Quote :
"what does that have to do with outsourcing of jobs?"

Just like the very first post, nothing.

first. not that i have anything against arabs. I like arabs. However, I am not an arab. Second, Muslim women are not treated like shit in Egypt, and neither are our Christian women. But as always, you are always implying I'm Muslim which I'm not...but some how you think thats insulting me.

My whole family is Christian, we do everything Christians do. Most of our churches are older then the US. But if by no freedom of religion you mean no one other then Christians and Muslims then perfect, cause that works for me.

we have plenty of uneducated people. So does the US, hell the president of the US would be considered uneducated by worldly standards. Again, what point are you trying to make?

You are weak charactered if by me stating a fact about Indians in the Middle East insulted you so deeply.

"Outsourcing" is awesome and is great for the global economy on so many levels. Of course, news won't ever be outsourced, but the concept is pretty funny.

Quote :
"Female genital mutilation in Egypt changed from an accepted if seldom talked about custom to a political hot topic after the news network CNN aired a story in September 1994 featuring the circumcision of a 9 year old girl from Cairo. The footage, showing the girl held down by a barber, screaming in protest while he performed the operation with a razor, embarrassed Egyptians and fuelled an outcry by women's groups and non-governmental organisations.

Statistics compiled in 1994 by Egypt's former ministry of population (now a subdivision of the ministry of health) estimated that between 70% and 90% of Egyptian women were circumcised. But a more recent survey conducted by the international group Marco puts the figure even higher, with 97% of women in both rural and urban areas reporting that they have been circumcised. Circumcisions range from clitoridectomies to almost total removal of the outside genitalia.

The practice seems to be rooted in both African tradition and Islamic beliefs"

Well, local news is so bad, why not? They could outsource it to dogs and it'd probably be higher quality.

Outsourcing is hardly an issue where this particular dying institution is concerned. Local news -- especially in California -- is for fogies and gawkers. It's faux earnestness over small matters, usually irrelevant, and endlessly repetitive.

What's so illegal about Student "VISA"? Do you even know the taxation requirements?

In fact, there's NO FUCKING way an immigrant could contribute MORE to the economy than a legal non-immigrant. I am not the one paying in-state tuition so that I could go back to a turrist country and train brothers in arms.

I forgot to say, I knew that would be your answer.

50,000 female abortions/infanticides per year
6,000 dowry-burnings/year in one city (Delhi)
Rampant child labor (12,000,000 work instead of going to school, a big chunk of them in bonded slave labor)
Rapes of lower-caste women with impunity
Killings of lower-caste men with impunity
Discrimination of lower-caste members
Subjugation of religious/ethnic minorities by gov
Staged fake-encounter killings by police in name of terrorism
Countless minority groups fighting for freedom
etc

FTW!!!

And I also know what your answer is going to be to the above.

As regards your post, I have already said that yes, all those countries you mentioned, have horrible human rights records. I am not arguing that. I might be from one of those countries on the list, and I might live in another one from the same list, but that doesn't blind me from reality, and I am not afraid to call a spade a spade.

But you, whenever someone brings up human rights abuses in India, you always dismiss it and bring up irrelevant shit, like, oh a minority member is PM, an untouchable was an MP, blah blah blah. As if that proves that rampant discrimination and abuse of women and untouchables can't exist in India. I mean, Pakistan had a woman PM, but WTF does that prove? NOTHING. Women are generally treated unfavorably, and in a lot of cases, horribly, in Pakistan. And so are they in India. And religious and ethnic minorities as well. And a lot of times, the authorities are complicit in the abuses, in both countries.

And oh, the funniest thing (or the saddest), you always say something like "but I never saw any of that abuse/discrimination in India".

Yeah no shit. First of all, that's the same answer that most upper-class Indians such as yourself, insulated from the realities of the life of 100's of millions, give. Second, no shit buddy, most of those abuses don't take place on the streets, and if they do, they don't take place on the streets of your rich neighbourhoods.

So go educate yourself and don't be blindly patriotic.

I said I wasn't going to discuss this, but I am breaking my own promise.

But now, I am really done with this. If you can't see it because you are so blindly nationalistic, nothing will make you see it. Unless one of those things in the list above befalls you or your family (almost impossible), you won't see it. It is like trying to prove to a blindly patriotic American that America has an ugly past vis-a-vis propping up dictators who committed genocide, etc. Or like trying to prove to some fanatic Muslim (who thinks America did 9/11) that Bin Laden really did do 9/11.

Ain't gonna work.
