Has anyone seen this yet? I was introduced to the Frames a little while ago and love their music.

This will start Friday, July 6th at Galaxy Cinema in Cary. Showtimes will be available soon.

Once is a 2006 Irish film written and directed by John Carney, who has referred to it as a "video album." This drama stars Irish musician Glen Hansard of the popular Irish rock band The Frames, along with Czech musician Markéta Irglová. Once has received awards and enthusiastic reviews, and has been described as a musical for the modern age. Hansard and Irglová were musical collaborators prior to making the film and released an album entitled The Swell Season in 2006. All the original songs in the movie were written by the two performers.

If you like Damien Rice you should enjoy the music of the Frames and Glen Hansard. Despite my hatred for musicals I'll definitely give this a chance.

I admit it...what's to say...yeah...
I'll relive it...without pain...mmm...
Backstreet lover on the side of the road
I got a bomb in my temple that is gonna explode
I got a sixteen gauge buried under my clothes, I play...
Once upon a time I could control myself
Ooh, once upon a time I could lose myself, yeah...

Oh, try and mimic what's insane...ooh, yeah...
I am in it...where do I stand?
Oh, Indian summer and I hate the heat
I got a backstreet lover on the passenger seat
I got my hand in my pocket, so determined, discreet...I pray...
Once upon a time I could control myself
Ooh, once upon a time I could lose myself, yeah, yeah...

You think I got my eyes closed
But I'm lookin' at you the whole fuckin' time...

Ooh, once upon a time I could control myself, yeah...
Once upon a time I could lose myself, yeah, yeah, yeah...
Once, upon a time I could love myself, yeah...
Once upon a time I could love you, yeah, yeah, yeah...
Once (4x)
Yeah...once, once...yeah, yeah...
Yeah...yeah, yeah...yeah, yeah...oww...

I finally saw this and thought it was alright.
This movie doesn't have near the emotional or creative impact of the scene in Hustle and Flow where the group makes "Whoop That Trick," if thats the song that I'm thinking of.

^ It was about on the same level as that for me. I really liked both of those films.

^^ I tried to think of some sort of intelligent or objective answer to that, but I have none. I guess it's just because beneath my cynical shell I am a romantic who also happens to love music. I love seeing the responses music provokes in people so there were some pretty moving moments for me.

It was refreshing to see a "musical" that wasn't just a bunch of overly dramatic burst-into-song moments. It was more gritty and down-to-earth, and with a few exceptions not very heavy handed (okay the scene in the studio with the producer was a bit hokey perhaps). The editing was uninteresting, I suppose, as it seemed to mainly be scenes shot from two angles and then cut back and forth at a steady pace. I guess they were going for a sort of documentary feel, especially with the DV camera.

Oh, and I still hate digital. Film plz. Are you listening David Lynch?

Aww, it's cute.

Super ultra bonus points for the scenes when she drags the vacuum.
