I'm thinking of going to the Franklin county animal shelter and getting all the kittens and adopting them out. Before I do, I need to know if I am going to be able to find homes for them. I definitely can't keep 6 or 7 kittens. So, if anyone on here wants one, let me know. They also have some super cute puppies. Any takers? 5/23/2007 11:15:29 AM |

^I know this isn't serious but..........someone is trying to find a home for 2 kitties in classifieds, why don't you stay close to home and only get two kitties not 6-7 5/23/2007 12:09:52 PM |

no, actually I am serious and I was going to go and pick the kittens up if anyone wanted the kittens. I cannot keep them. I was just trying to see if anyone wanted a kitten and if enough people did, I was going to go pick them up so that they didn't get gassed. 5/23/2007 12:18:25 PM |

there's always going to be kittens/cats being gassed I'm not sure you're one act will do much good in the long run. don't get me wrong, I love cats, and I'd save them all if I could, but you have to be practical too.

true, but I wanted to make a teeny little difference if I could. And I'd much rather go and get those kittens for people looking for kittens anyway than for people to go out and get a kitten from a pet store or something. Could save one life, ya know? 5/23/2007 1:46:33 PM |

if you're interested in fostering, you could always contact one of the cat rescues. they're always looking for more foster homes and they would help place the kittens when they're ready to be adopted out. it might be more trouble though if you have to be approved by the rescue and whatnot, but it's just another option. 5/23/2007 4:54:25 PM |

It's my understanding that kittens get adopted waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay faster and easier than adult cats. Save the adult cats, the kittens will most likely get adopted anyways. 5/23/2007 5:11:37 PM |

Tabby, for trying to save the kitties, but yeah, you should try to rescue the adult cats instead. They are the ones more likely to be put down. If I could have a cat, I would take one- adult or kitten. 5/23/2007 5:36:36 PM |

honestly
you have a family it appears... why don't you worry about them and making sure they have a happy home before you fill their home up with unwanted cats

Last time I went to the Franklin Co animal control facility, they had *no* cats or kittens; only dogs. Lots and lots of dogs. Also, I know of at least one agency, Best Friends Pet Adoption, that goes to Franklin Co. animal control facility and gets the animals available to put them into their foster and adoption system. If you'd like to contact them to foster or help in any way, a lady at my work is on their board and if you PM me I can get you her info.
Also, I second the notion that you should save adult cats- they are *way* more likely to end up being gassed than the kittens.
Good luck! 5/23/2007 6:33:12 PM |

I wasn't going to bring them into my home. My idea was to go and pick them up and drop them off at their new homes before coming back to my home. So, if I had found four people who wanted a kitten, I would have gotten four kittens. The idea was to make it easy on people who wanted the kittens and to find homes for the kittens. There were no adult cats at the shelter when I checked...only kittens. If there had been adult cats, I would have suggested rescuing those too.

The thing about working through a rescue organization, though, is that the organization has the resources to get the kittens/cats checked out before adopting them out- they still adopt out the kittens/cata with FeLV, for example (a very common fatal illness), they just make sure that the new owner understands what that means for them and they make sure there aren't other cats in the house because vaccination does not always prevent the disease from spreading (http://www.gla.ac.uk/companion/ofelv.htm#mixinfd).
It's noble what you want to do, but in order for these cats/kittens to get the best care possible, they really should be rescued through a rescue organization with the infrastructure to do it effectively; saving these kittens and putting them in new homes only to have them die from disease that wasn't known/disclosed or sicken other cats isn't fair to their new families and previous pets.
You could call Best Friend Pet Adoption and see if they have plans to pick up these kittens or if they know of someone who will. 5/23/2007 9:23:00 PM |
