Anybody know of a good free online file storage place?

Are you looking for a place that you can link to to provide others with the files, or more of a "need more room on my computer" type of storage?

i just signed up for mozy.com last week for free (up to 2GB), automated, encrypted online backups. It's pretty sweet so far.
will probably opt for the $5/month for unlimited storage so I can put all my music and pictures up too.

it's only a backup though, not for sharing or syncing with computers elsewhere.

^while i cant agree with you just because i'm not an expert on file storage...i can confirm that gmail is used for file storage by people...i read an article that gmail has some program that if you pay a certain amount of money you can store a shitload in your gmail...i'm pretty sure the article was about gmail...might have been yahoo but i think it was gmail...they were talking about businesses that hotlink from their gmail account or something for their websites

i ain't talking about some fancy stuff that will let me hotlink from gmail, i am simply talking about storage, which ZeeLuker seems to want.

you email documents to yourself, and make a separate folder (label) for them, and you will always have access to them as long as you have access to the internets.

and you can store a LOT.

concerning using your email to store files....

you can use Gmail, which has attachment limits up to 20MB now and total storage ~2.8GB. There are several programs that help add files to Gmail and you can even mount Gmail as a drive on your PC to have direct access to the files. Be aware though, that these programs are technically against Gmails TOC, so if you have a lot of fishy activity on it, there's not garuntee that your account won't be suspended.

Also, just a couple weeks ago, Yahoo Email announced unlimited storage, so if you haev a yahoo.com account, there is no limit.

but apart from that, there are dozens or hundreds of free and for-pay online file storage places. Some of which I would be cautious about turning over all my files to, others that are probably very reliable and have strong encryption and all that.

finally, you can get yourself a web-hosting account at somewhere like 1and1.com for <$4/month for 120GB, and just upload files to your own personal web space (put them in a folder above any web-accessible folders, where you can still access them via FTP or SSH, but not through the web)

You get a url for your file and everything.
