China's former top drug regulator was sentenced to death Tuesday in an unusually harsh punishment for taking bribes to approve substandard medicines, including an antibiotic blamed for at least 10 deaths.

The sentence was levied by "Beijing's No. 1 Intermediate People's Court," which really makes you wonder how tough the advanced people's court can be.

Classic Chinese approach to handling senior figures that have fallen out of favor. I wonder if he was simply sacked as a scapegoat to pacify the masses on the issue or if he was sacrificed as part of an even larger campaign by Hu Jintao's ruling faction to suppress opposing factions within his government. That's what happened in all those corruption cases a couple of years ago.
