They keep showing them on VH1 Classic.

Nena - 99 Red Balloons:

Shot on a Dutch army training base in Hilversam, Holland.

Gabrielle Susanne Kerner
Born: March 26, 1960
Place: Hagen, Germany

She's been called Nena since she was 3- from the Spanish word for "little girl"

The German version of this song became a US hit in '83.

The band then recorded an English version-- but had no money for a video.

This video was recycled from scenes shot for a Dutch TV show.

In '83, German law required recycling of glass and paper, aber, not video tape.

Pre-existing concert footage was inserted to cover up a technical problem: she's lip synching in German.

The keyboardist wrote this song after watching a balloon float away at a concert. He imagines that balloon floating over the Berlin Wall and starting World War III.

Early '80s warning systems weren't capable of detecting a balloon on radar.

American fans thought this was an anti-Russian song. East German fans thought it was anti-American.

Nena says it's an "anti-nuclear holocaust" song.

In '83, the US kept 3400 nuclear weapons in West Germany.

The director's dad was a NATO general-- he "pulled strings" so the crew could use the base.

The director hated his dad-- he made this "pacifist" video as revenge against him.

During filming, soldiers from the army base shot at the balloons with real bullets.

Real gasoline bomb. The band was "terrified"-- they clung to each other during the explosion.

The band was still crying when their manager drove them home that night.

The band's German hometown was destroyed by bombs in WWII.

Germans invaded America in 1775-- they helped the British in the Revolutionary War.

[picture of the Hoff] This American invaded Germany in the 80s-- he had 5 hit albums there.

Nena travelled to Berlin in '89 to watch the Wall crumble.

The band crumbled in '86-- they never had another US hit.

Since then Nena has released 4 solo albums and appeared in 3 films.

She says there's one thing she'll never do: STOP!

The former band members still meet regularly to help each other with their various solo projects. Nena records a children's album everytime she gets pregnant- 4 times so far. And she hosted the 1998 German Grammy awards.

Why did they cancel that show? It was the only good thing VH1 produced.

yea, pop-up video rocks. VH1 is becoming more like MTV now, less music videos, more reality shows.
