Quote : | "Icaridin has been reported in the Journal of Drugs and Dermatology (Jan-Feb 2004) to be as effective as DEET without the irritation associated with DEET.
According to the WHO, icaridin “demonstrates excellent repellent properties comparable to, and often superior to, those of the standard DEET.”

it works GREAT, fine for synthetic materials too.
rumors of carcinogenic properties though. 6/12/2007 6:43:23 PM |

I've used both Picaridin and N,N-Diethyl-metatoluamide.
I've had good results with both, though DEET fucking ruins any synthetic short of nylon. Including my field pen and my PDA stylus.
Picaridin required more frequent application, but the smell wasn't nearly as offensive as DEET.
Of course, I use the 30% DEET Sportsman's concentration OFF! when I use DEET. I made the mistake of applying it too regularly a couple of times when out doing fieldwork. It was like I got stoned off the shit. Interesting phenomenon.
Now my jisms prolly got two heads and forked tails or something... 6/12/2007 9:12:22 PM |

picaridin isn't new. we've been using it for a few years. the lack of smell is nice and it's not so greasy...but DEET still kicks its ass. 6/12/2007 10:11:59 PM |

Deet has never worked for me. Mosquitoes still bite me, even minutes after I apply it. 6/13/2007 7:12:48 AM |

ive never had a problem with DEET. Spent a summer in the Dominican and the bottles of 100% DEET were lifesavers. 6/13/2007 7:35:14 AM |

I spent 2 years in the Dominican Republic - the mosquitoes only stopped biting after my blood changed to match that of the locals. Nothing seems to stop American mosquitoes

^^ mainstream products cause cancer
there are lots of alternatives that do not contain ingredients that are as harmful. true, they may not work quite as well, in some cases. it's a trade-off i suppose. 6/16/2007 5:55:39 PM |

I put a small bottle of insect repellent in the same Ziplock bag as my spare AA spotlight batteries on the way to an Outward Bound course in Oregon. Long story short, the repellent leaked and melted the plastic wrap off the batteries and glued them to the bag. It was enough to make me think twice about using it on my skin, and I threw it away and just let the bugs bite. I didn't seem to be any worse off than people that bathed in the stuff. 6/16/2007 7:42:46 PM |
