Today my neighbor X told my neighbor Y "happy father's day". Now that alone is not terribly surprising, but the thing is that neighbor Y is a woman. Neighbor X justified the comment by observing that neighbor Y was a single mom, so she is the mom and the dad.

discuss.

i have to imagine that lady isn't stupid enough to think she's the mother and the father - likewise the chances of her celebrating father's day are zero - X is an idiot

^well I'd like to argue with you about that, but honesty precludes that action.

no the woman is not the father.... she is the mother.... she has a DAY... now if there were two mothers, MAYBE on the off chance you HAD to have both days you could. BUT THEY HAVE A DAY to celebrate all there efforts. they were not forgotten, now leave us guys our day.

I think it makes sense. While she can't in every way, she is somehow expected to fill both roles. It's rather silly to say, "Happy Father's Day," to her, but it's not exactly wrong either. I imagine she appreciated it.

^in the traditional meaning of "father's day" yes, my neighbor was suggesting a slight generalization of the term. I think made up holidays are stupid anyway so I don't really care one way or the other, for me every day is father's day.
