I have this motherboard: http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en-us/mb/content.php?S_ID=27
With this sound card: Realtek ALC655 6-Channel AC97 Audio Realtek ALC658 6-Channel AC97 Audio
Am I able to get 5.1 Channel output using this card? I tried the driver/codec that came with the mother board and on the Realtek site and I still can't get more than 2 of 5 speakers to work. The motherboard has a spot for 3 speaker inputs in the back so I would assume I could using 5.1 speakers.
And yes I know my mother board sucks... 6/19/2007 7:26:08 AM |

i'd figure the card would support 5.1 channel data
and I believe I have 2 other audio ports above the 3 input audio ports for microphone/headphone and line in (can't check now because I am at work) 6/19/2007 9:52:04 AM |

Are you giving it a 5.1 signal? If you're just playing music, only the front left and right are going to work. 6/19/2007 1:35:14 PM |

Depending on the sound card set-up you'll usually get 2.1 if you're playing music. You have to give it a 5.1 signal to hear it. Although with most creative cards, and some realtek cards i've seen it automatically splits the stereo to the other channels. Usually a sound card will have 3 ports for 5.1/7.1, and then a line in, and microphone. So either 5-6 ports show you that you have 5.1/7.1. Three ports is usually just 2.1. 6/19/2007 1:48:40 PM |

so what you're saying is that you don't have a sound card, you're talking about the on-board sound.
get a soundblaster audigy, they are cheap
in any event, the stats say it's 6 channel audio so you should be able to get your 5.1 6/19/2007 6:03:29 PM |

^ exactly...
also, make sure you go into whatever speaker setup you have and set it to output 5.1 sound. Go to Control Panel->Sounds and crap and then click on the lower "Advanced" button. If the resulting window doesn't have "5.1 something or other" already selected in the drop-down box, then you probably don't have it set right. 6/19/2007 7:07:54 PM |
