Not b/c of steroids or legal troubles, but because of on field action[s]..
Bill Buckner? From borderline HOFer to face of a franchise's misery. 2004 erased a lot of the hate towards him from Sox fans but his legacy continues to be the Mookie groundball.
Ralph Branca? The guy was one of the few baseball players of the era who didn't drink, didn't smoke, and didn't fuck everything that walked. I remember reading that he, to this day, doesn't understand why God chose him for that moment. (for those who don't know he was the pitcher in the '51 'Shot Heard 'round the World). 6/21/2007 11:09:34 PM |

Steve Smith in Calgary could be one if he didn't have such a great career.
Definitely have to include Escobar in the World Cup in '94... I mean the guy got shot over it.
---- how about NFL? Leon Lett? Nah, they still won one of those and one was just a regular season game? Scott Norwood maybe? That was the symbol of the Bills Super Bowl futility.
Baseball seems to always have these moments on lockdown for some reason...
V well, he killed himself a few years later but that didn't even lose the game (the angels tied it up in the 9th before losing it in xtras) and we all know the three angels fans from that era are over it.
p.s. it's an absolute travesty that neither Al Michaels nor Bob Costas do baseball anymore. A big fuck you to Fox/ESPN and especially Jon Miller, Joe Morgan, Joe Buck, and Tim McCarver..

Football could be Jackie Smith, the Cowboys tight end who dropped that sure TD pass to cost them the Super Bowl
or Trey Junkin, that long snapper that cost the Giants that playoff game vs the Niners a few years ago 6/21/2007 11:21:33 PM |

Kermit Washington should be on this list. He is the guy who nearly killer Rudy Tomjanovich with a punch during an NBA game in the 70s.
He was basically a very good person and decent NBA player until that punch. After that he was a thug and his NBA career ended quickly. 6/22/2007 6:05:16 PM |

id say in a list
Pete Rose Dennis Rodman was a good one mentioned as well as Sheed and Artest Ryan Leaf has to kinda be up there in some of the talks at least football anyways since he was such a character the cowboys TE mentioned Michael Vick recently the fan who grabbed that foul ball awhile back and certainly Tonya Harding and who could forget
OJ simpson even tho you did say no legal stuff and strictly on field/court related.
as for the NC State list
you left off Wilkins and that manager who turned on Jimmy V cant remember his name although he wasnt really an athlete, but nonetheless a sports figure.
