Are you sure it is a 2G iPod? The 3G was the first one that supported USB, the 2G's were firewire only.

i have a 2gb nano first gen and it uses usb - the wire i have for it has usb and firewire tips, meeting together at the standard 'dock' connector...i uwse the usb tip and it works fine, though
the firewire port works also.
