this show rules.
so some of the routes he takes are staged? the second person credited on the show is a "fixer," that doesn't mean most of the shit he does and accomplishes aren't amazing and informative. he puts himself in the most extreme of situations and doesn't spend HIS time worrying about camera angles.
I also like the real stories that he integrates into the show. 6/23/2007 1:01:55 AM |

even if you are going to bag on that aspect of the show, the stuff he does is unreal...sure, the average person would never try most of that stuff, but grylls himself isn't a survival expert...traversing that rope across the mountain, swimming in the glacier pool/alaskan mountain range, ice tunnels

Why are people saying this is staged exactly?
I don't know if I would eat food cooked in that muddy water... I would think lots of noxious gasses bubble up through the geothermal vents that would make the meat poisoned. 6/23/2007 3:03:17 AM |

but yeah, sometimes I think he's just "too lucky" as far as the dead animals, bird's eggs, random rope ladders that just happen to be there. 6/23/2007 6:08:10 AM |

some of the stuff he does is not a smart thing to do if you were really trying to survive, like jumping in that glacier river to swim across. Some of the stuff he does is just extreme and just for show, if he was just trying to survive it would probably be a less interesting show. And personally I don't give a damn how much better les is or that fucking stupid fanboy argument that wastes space in these threads between the two shows, I have seen both and I like man vs wild better. 6/23/2007 10:43:48 AM |

I wouldn't say there was any pwnage going on either way, the shit bear does is still real, it's not like cgi or something totally unreal. Maybe by 'fake' you meant 'staged,' 'set up' or 'not something a person in a survival situation would really do,' but he is still really doing the things he does on that show. He's really eating a raw fish or really jumping into a glacier lake and really climbing down a waterfall, etc.
And he doesn't always have a huge camera crew with him all the time, e.g. the time he was stuck on a pacific desert island and he made that raft/sailboat and headed out to sea when all the sharks started circling and bumping his boat. That was just bear by himself then. I just feel like it makes for better tv, let's not fly off the handle about a tv show here.
Oh and btw office, I hate movies with cheesy cgi or action that is so fake that it doesn't obey the laws of physics.6/24/2007 4:56:11 PM |

a lot of the things that Bear does that you "wouldnt want to do in a real survival situation" (i.e. jumping in the glacier water, jumping in the quicksand, etc.) is to show the viewer what to do IF they happened to be in the particular situation - not that you will need to do those crazy/stupid things in order to survive 6/24/2007 5:30:25 PM |

Quote : | "Kenai Fjords National Park (AK) Commercial Filming Violation Involving Discovery Channel
On July 16th, park resource management specialist Mike Tetreau, currently an intermittent employee working with a private firm conducting follow-up studies related to the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill along the park coastline, found an apparent commercial filming production in Taroka Arm, a seldom-visited area along the park's southern coast. In addition to the campsite "set" itself, a nearby support crew camp was located near a sensitive archaeological site. Ranger Sean Brennan, currently on detail as a criminal investigator assignment with the NPS Investigative Services Branch, flew to the site by chartered float plane the following day with Tetreau and contacted Les Stroud, also known as the "Survivorman", who has a show by the same name currently running on the Discovery Channel. Stroud, with a crew of four at the nearby camp, was apparently filming an upcoming episode of the show in the park, with a driftwood shelter constructed on the beach and multiple cameras surrounding it. Stroud was cited for commercial filming without a permit, and given the opportunity to obtain a permit. Stroud paid the required application, location and monitoring fees, totaling approximately $2,800, which will allow the park to recover most of the cost of the investigation. [Submitted by Jim Ireland, Chief of Interpretation & Visitor Services/Chief Ranger]" |

Survivorman would kick the shit out of this guy.
Quote : | "On another occasion in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains where he was filmed biting off the head of a snake for breakfast and struggling for survival “with just a water bottle, a cup and a flint for making fire”, he actually slept some nights with the crew in a lodge fitted with television and internet access. The Pines Resort at Bass Lake is advertised as “a cosy getaway for families” with blueberry pancakes for breakfast.
In one episode Grylls, son of the late Tory MP Sir Michael Grylls, was shown apparently building a Polynesian-style raft using only materials around him, including bamboo, hibiscus twine and palm leaves for a sail.
But according to Mark Weinert, an Oregon-based survival consultant brought in for the job, it was he who led the team that built the raft. It was then dismantled so that Grylls could be shown building it on camera.
In another episode viewers watched as Grylls tried to coax an apparently wild mustang into a lasso in the Sierra Nevada. “I’m in luck,” he told viewers, apparently coming across four wild horses grazing in a meadow. “A chance to use an old native American mode of transport comes my way. This is one of the few places in the whole of the US where horses still roam wild.”
In fact, Weinert said, the horses were not wild but were brought in by trailer from a nearby trekking station for the “choreographed” feature." |

just wondering, and it's probably irrelevant, but what is the sickest thing that Les has ever done? I mean Bear has basically drank "shitwater" from an elephant and has drank, and worn, his own piss...this doesn't necessarily put Bear "up one" but I would preferably survive by doing the more practical less "shitty" survival techniques... 7/26/2007 8:00:16 PM |

Quote : | "Grylls is the star of "Man vs. Wild," an increasingly popular series on Discovery Channel that recently concluded its second season. Each episode he parachutes into a different uninhabited territory without a map or much else in the way of camping equipment and spends several days trying to find his way back to civilization.
But this British adventurer is now the subject of an investigation by U.K.'s Channel 4, which already has confirmed that Grylls checked into motels on a few occasions when he was depicted on TV having slept under the stars. Other allegations have been made suggesting that the crew that records Grylls in action isn't as hands-off as it might appear to viewers." |

Are you being serious man? This shit is like a week old at best.
And honestly, who cares where he really sleeps. He already has a "crew" with him, so its not like he is out there roughing it like Les. And as much as I love Survivorman, MvW is a much more entertaining show, just because Bear will do some insane shit. And its not like he doesnt have some great advice from time to time. I dont think anyone that watches the show on a weekly basis honestly believed Bear was out there 100% of the time roughing it with 0% support the entire time.
