I'm donating my gently used clothes to goodwill...

But what about some older stuff with marks or tears in it? Is there anything else that can be done other than to just toss them? Tossing 80% or 90% good fabric because a small portion is bad just seems really inefficient to me...

Put them on FreeCycle. Just explain that they are old clothes with marks or tears, but the majority is good fabric that could be used by someone.

Most places like Goodwill will still take them, and evaluate whether they are suitable for sale. If not, they will sell them off to a rag dealer and still get some benefit out of them.

Just call and ask.

they've got clothes with paint on them and frays galore at joints like the Gap...and they charge mad loot to get them

market your used clothes as 'designer originals'

for real though, just donate them to goodwill and take it off your taxes
