I think its painfully clear, already, just a year later that the Texans made a terrible pick. Perhaps if they had somehow managed to stick with Carr, it might not be as obvious, but to claim he is your future QB, pass on Young, then release Carr within the year as Young excels as a rookie QB, and comes into Houston and single handedly wins the game for the Titans, is just another smack in the face for a struggling franchise like the Texans.

Young would have had a decent year in Houston...
but he'd be beat to hell by the end of the year... and probably wouldn't have had anywhere near the kind of performance he managed at Tennessee 6/23/2007 7:57:57 PM |

Actually I just don't give a damn and don't read what you post.
And VY had 12 TDs and 13 INTs....how about you let him prove some more before you list him as an elite QB? 6/23/2007 8:25:06 PM |
TheOffice Suspended 2343 Posts user info edit post |
Nobody has claimed him to be an elite QB. But he has clearly proven himself to be a better pick than Mario. Hell, like I said, he went in and beat the Texans pretty much by himself and punked out Mario on his game winning run. Young sells out the stadium, and brought TONS of fan interest to the Titans, something they were missing. Hell, did you see how pumped the Texans stadium was when Young came into town? The place was sold out and was going nuts over him. Thats how every home game could have been for them, yet they passed on it for Mario. A player that has yet to do anything, and has yet to sell out a game by himself. And I know selling out a stadium doesn't win games, but when you are a struggling franchise like the Texans, you need to build a fan base, and fast. Something Young could have and has done instantly for the Titans.

Mario played the whole year with plantar fasciitis in his foot, which prevented him from bursting off the line.
Expect more production out of him this year.
Vince Young will follow the pattern of other ultra-mobile QB's: He'll shine in his first 3 or 4 years before defenses adapt to his style and injuries slow him down. When he's retiring at 28, Mario will be in his prime.
Just look at the careers of Randall Cunningham, Kordell Stewart, Mike Vick, etc. They flash incredible potential for a few years, but eventually they slow down and get exposed as mediocre passers. People seem to forget that Young's completion percentage and passer rating were the worst of any starting QB last year.

Vince Young's health should be more of a concern. He's smaller than Mario, and he'll take a lot more hits over the course of the season. 6/23/2007 8:34:43 PM |

Maybe not strictly as a runner but many of them evolve into pretty good QB's that have lengthy careers..... Rich Gannon, Steve Young, and even Cunningham are good examples.6/23/2007 9:51:12 PM |

Looks like we got another John Clayton expert on our hands here....I'd wait until Young tears up the league on a 3-5 year basis before crowning him the greatest. And wasn't it about Bush-Mario, now its Young-Mario. Gosh, I didn't know a team could be hammered twice for one move, that's a head scratcher. Part of why Houston nabbed Mario was because they knew he wouldn't be an issue signing for what they wanted to pay. Not true with Bush, he was demanding more money that any other first pick, and they figured, well we need defense, and we can sign Mario in about 5 minutes rather than go through the struggle with Bush. But I guess now we're nailing Houston for not picking Young. Speaking of the Titans, how's that #6 pick from the 05 draft doing?? Why do more people not harp on the Rockets of Houston more than the Texans for the 84 draft, yea Hakeem was good, but no MJ, and the only reason Hakeem has two rings is because Jordan said he could by taking two years off.
He'll regret his playing style when in 5 years his brain will be that of an 80 year old because of the knocks

Another knock on taking Mario was they could have traded down and still got him because nobody in their right mind would draft him #1. They could have traded down to #3 or 4 and gotten Mario AND another pick or player. 6/23/2007 10:19:36 PM |

Then trade down to #2. No reason to take Mario #1 at all. Hey, if I was the only person saying this was a bad move, then fine. But pretty much every single person that has anything to do with sports will tell you the Texans fucked up, royally. The only people who don't think so are NCSU fans, which is understandably, you have to stick by your boy, but there comes a point where you have to admit he was a waste at #1. 6/23/2007 10:33:45 PM |

exactly my thought. he's playing in the AFC. I think if he had gone to an NFC south team, he wouldn't have done as well, since Tampa Bay has showed everybody how to shut Vick down. It's too early to tell with Young i guess....but still, i think his success last season can be chalked up to the novelty factor6/24/2007 9:46:00 AM |

VY is a big, strong QB. He's built about like McNabb and Culpepper. Those guys have missed most of the last 2 years due to injuries.
The reality is that if he tries to scramble as much as he did last year, he will take twice the punishment that most QB's take. Until he shows that he can be effective as a pocket passer, he will only be a novelty who could be sent into retirement with one vicious hit. 6/24/2007 1:45:21 PM |

Defense wins championships
All of the Top Defensive teams in the League are anchored by a superstar Defensive End. The Texans took the best defensive player in the draft.
They were still giving Carr one more season.
It would have sold more seats and merchandise had they taken Young but Mobile QBs dont win championships.
I think it was the right FOOTBALL pick but the wrong money pick 6/24/2007 2:50:23 PM |

The Texans have 4 first-round draft picks on the defensive line over the last 4 years: Jason Babin, Travis Johnson, Mario and Amobe Okoye. Plus they have some decent backups in Anthony Weaver, Anthony Maddox and Antwan Peek.
If that line ever lives up to it's potential, watch out. 6/24/2007 2:58:07 PM |

Picking Mario first was what the texans wanted. Could they have traded down and gotten him 2 or 3 probably. Everyone says Vince young is a stud but he will be a dud this year since the Titans got rid of his WR's. Reggie bush is not a great running back. He is a good slot back and decoy as they used him in New Orleans. He will never equal the status of Larry Johnson, and LT. Mario williams will continue to be good. He already helped his middle linebacker to become defensive rookie of the year. D-line man should cause double teams and prevent the O-line from moving up and blocking the line backers. He was second on his team with 4.5 sacks. What the Texans did was smart get a player to help your team that would sign and be with the team from the start not like the Bush who would hold out. 6/25/2007 9:24:46 AM |

YOU KNOW THAT COMBINE FREAK THAT THE BENGALS DRAFTED YEARS AGO THAT NEVER LIVED UP TO THE HYPE OF BEING A #1 PICK....I THINK MARSHALL FAULK WAS PICKEDED 2ND IN THAT DRAFT AND LOOK HOW THAT ONE WORKED OUT....PICKING MARIO WILLIAMS IS THE SAME DUMB MOVE
10 YEARS FROM NOW THAT CHOICE WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE WORST #1 DRAFT CHOICES IN RECENT NFL HISTORY

Reggie bush didn't live up to the hype either. Vince young will not be the superstar that everyone thinks he will be either. Its a draft and a business choice by the team to take a good player pay him a salary he would accept and have him signed before the draft started. Or you can take bush who held out and didn't even have a impact until like week 9 when he returned a kick back for a TD.Drafting Bush with a terrible O-line would have caused everyone to complain about bush's lack of ability to play. Lets wait a few years before you say the draft pick was a terrible one. 6/25/2007 10:00:59 AM |
