So currently we're hosting our own website but outsource all of our e-commerce. Anybody have experience with some in house hosted solutions? Microsoft Commerce Server seems overkill, but its all I know of.

Thanks, any other ideas? IBM and Micro$oft are about it otherwise, opensource will definitely be a nice option though!

cube cart is free, but you can buy their license and remove their copyright from the site. I've been playing around for the past week or so and I like it better then os commerce. I don't care about removing their copyright signature on the bottom of the site. Their free software has everything as the paid version. Definitely look to get an SSL certificate and backup your mySql database constantly.

I spent several hours setting up oscommerce for a new online shop. Considering how much you hear about it, it really really really sucks. No real template system, the code is messy. Basically it seems that its very "open source" but no one is really managing the whole project very well. Its useability and overall look and feel make you think its something from 2001.

Zen cart is a commercial product based off oscommerce, I've heard its better. I am going to check out cube cart.

cube cart is pretty sweet for what it is. It's fairly simple, but effective. You can make your own template and have the site look very pro looking up to a point.
