i've had a system in a closet for a few months and just got it out and trying to set it up. however every time i turn if off and on (it doesn't do this if i only restart) it says "New CPU installed! BIOS settings incorrect. hit F1 to enter setup F2 to load defaults and continue"

does this mean the CMOS battery is dead? it works fine after i re-input the BIOS settings every time.

Eh, some of the older systems CMOS batteries can be kind of expensive because they can be hard to find. I've seen them up to 20 at places that usually had fairly reasonable prices on other hard to find batteries.

Yeah, the CR2012 or 2016's or whatever just like in TI-83's.

What surprised me is how expensive the resume and CMOS batteries in some laptops can be.

Send me a PM before you do that, I'll take it off your hands whatever it is ...

Of course, if you purchase a battery, open the case, find the motherboard (um, the thing that everything else is attached to...), find the silver battery that is the same size as the one you purchased, push the tabs out 1-2mm for each, battery pops out, pop new battery in, properly dispose of old battery ... turn on computer.

But maybe that's too much work, so send me a PM.

I was talking about the 6 year old laptop i user for a basic webserver. if the replacement costs much of anything for that fucker it sure as hell isn't worth it.
