So I just started to run kubuntu on my main computer. The one piece of software I can't find a replacement for is dvdfab decrypter. Im looking for a program to just take a dvd and remove the encryption and place the file on my hard drive. Anybody know a a native linux program that does this well? I googled and tried a few but none worked that great. Also tried WINE but it gave back an error for dvdfab. 6/27/2007 8:49:00 PM |

I have used it in windows some but that was just to shrink files I have already ripped. Can that rip files straight to the hard drive and does it handle the newer encryption that came on dvds such as casino royale? 6/27/2007 9:29:40 PM |

It can rip files from the dvd but I don't think it works on a lot of the newer DVDs 6/27/2007 10:33:13 PM |

linux as a desktop is way too much upkeep and full of disappointments down the road. 6/28/2007 8:54:01 AM |

I agree at first it was a pain but after I got my video card drivers working it has been smooth sailing. I have never had it crash on me and its really easy to maintain. Granted this has only been for 2 weeks but it seems pretty stable. There is a small lack of programs in some areas but over all linux is working great. What is so hard to upkeep about it? 6/28/2007 11:38:42 AM |

Yea man I read about it and installed it. Seems to be doing what I need it to do. It is running mighty slow though. When I justed Dvdfab it would take about 25 mins to rip the dvd. It looks like vobcopy will take around an hour and a half. Is this normal or did I mess up the options? Thanks for the help. 6/28/2007 6:20:16 PM |

make sure you have dma enabled on your drive.
sudo hdparm -i /dev/??? <-- whatever your dvd device is.
if it is enabled then i guess its just going to take a while but if not enabling dma will speed things up. ubuntu forums should be able to help you with enabling dma if needed. 6/28/2007 6:47:31 PM |
