$10,995
94,000 miles New timing belt, water pump, thermostat. Bose tires have 7k miles.
The owner of a local import shop is selling his wifey's car. They picked it up last year with around 60-70k. Before that I believe it was leased.

Also you should be aware, basic maint costs on the 2.7t are very high. Not saying its a bad motor, but costs both parts and the labor to do them is much higher than most other similar priced cars.
That and the 2.7t tend to eat turbos around the 120k mark. Same goes for the trans if its an auto 6/30/2007 5:15:01 PM |

I don't think I've heard of too many audi's making it past 140k... but at the same time, they aren't nearly as popular as hondas/toyota's and other vehicles that you do typically hear of running forever...
its an extremely nice car and I loved the hell out of mine, but I just didn't trust it to not leave me bankrupt...
Edmunds trade in value is pretty accurate to what the dealer paid for it... mark it as average and the dealer trade in drops a grand...
the price isn't bad, but unless your paying in full out of pocket its probably going to shit the bed before your done paying it off... 7/1/2007 3:00:10 PM |

it would probably be paid in cash. This shop is about a half of a mile from where I live so he has to realize it's likely he would be servicing the car for the entire time i live here. I want Audi to look at it, but i would prefer to do it after he fixes everything, which he's suggesting only happens when I agree to buy it. What should I ultimately shoot for as an acceptable offer/purchase? Nothing else major would die other than the turbos and transmission? Aren't the turbos that are dying at 120k part of chipped/boosted engines whose owners ragged them street racing BMWs and shit?
Should I try to work any kind of warranty into the deal? I mean, the seller *is* an import shop owner. Or should I just forget about it, and start looking at 1.8Ts again. 7/1/2007 4:37:59 PM |

i'd lowball the hell out of the guy and take the money you save as insurance.
i'd also ask for a 1 year warranty. 7/2/2007 1:10:40 AM |

Could be the camera angle/lighting but check the tread depth on the edges of the tires. Looks low to me. The slight rough wear pattern on the edge of the sidewall makes me think the alignment might be out and even though tires are only 7k old, they might not have much left. 7/2/2007 4:53:48 AM |

ok, final thoughts, should i drive it again, rag it...take it to the audi dealership for a PPI...consider haggling the owner for some kind of warranty, or just suffer and wait ages for a decent A4 1.8TQ to roll in my lap?

gonna take it to the dealership on tuesday. then lowball him with whatever they find wrong to compensate for the high price. make him throw in some kind of 30 day he-fixes-it-free warranty and an auto detail maybe? The Audi mechanic said he would check the turbos for me too in the bumper-bumper inspection.
then again, i could probably offer this guy 12.5k cash for his S4 that just had a lot of work done under warranty. And another grand to ship it to NC

And i've come to peace with the fact these are pay2play cars. My insurance agent told me the A6 is like a 20 something rating while most cars are a lot lower than that. Shows right there how expensive it is to fix :\

D/S Front Upper P/S Front/Rear Upper Suspension link boots torn
Outer tie rod end boots torn
Excessive run-out in front rotors Rear pads worn 90-95%
Recommend Brake Flush, Fuel Injection Service & Timing belt/pump/thermostat
Oil Leak from camshaft tensioner seals.
Check engine light was on when I brought it home from the dealership/PPI. The couple times I drove it, I never noticed it. Tech also noticed the hesitation I described in the first post and held off on a diagnosis, but quoted it as a misfire, possibly ignition coil.
Seller laughed at some of the things the dealership tried to say was wrong, especially when he noticed the labor charge for cam tensioner seals as well as the timing belt.
Is the price set too high given these problems? Timing belt and seals are going to be fixed, as well as the engine light diagnosed and the misfire corrected before I purchase. How do I go about protecting myself before/after buying so that I know he will fix these problems?
I really appreciate all the help, just don't want to get stuck with a 20k bill on a 9k car. =\
------ Appearance of the car isn't too much of an issue. My buddy and I can spend a day detailing it with his claybar/solvents/cleaners etc after I buy it. 7/18/2007 12:17:21 AM |

That's really not that great of a deal. That's what virtually every one who knows about cars here has told you, if you weren't going to listen to anybody, why keep asking? That car looks fairly hardly treated, what's up w/the missing headlight washers?
You can find a similar car for less, so either offer him a significantly lower price, or don't buy this car... Ahmet 7/18/2007 9:48:59 AM |
