I'm thinking of switching from 305 to 405 for scheduling reasons. What are the primary difference between the two and how big is the difference as far as level of difficulty? I consider myself decent at linear algebra having had some exposure to it already.

405 is supposed to be a bit more theoretical, since it's the one that math majors take. However, the depth at which 405 is taught really depends on the instructor.

405 isn't that hard, I don't know about 305

[Edited on June 30, 2007 at 2:02 PM. Reason : 405 was mostly abstract theory though, using numbers in the matricies didn't happen much]

im in the 405 class for the fall, and i thought i looked at it recently and saw that there is only one class of it and it is down to the last two spots on the waitlist. so unless you need to switch into it i wouldnt bother and going through all that mess.

Just take 405. Everything in the world uses linear algebra

I was actually thinking of doing a quick switch and taking it in the next summer session so I could take something I would really like to take in the fall that 305 is currently blocking me from doing. Oh well.

just take it already. Even if you have to do some theory its worthwhile. It may well be the
most useful theory in undergraduate math. Listen to the Lowjack. Koh seems really nice, I don't know one way or the other about Ramsey.
