I don't normally ask for help with my rescues, but my husband found a really cool lab mix a few weeks ago. We got him neutered and vaccinated and heartworm tested. The laboratory lost his blood so we had to retest him last week. Since I am not a lucky person, the dog is heartworm positive. We are spending our own money on him since we can not convince an all breed rescue to take him and there is no way in hell he is going to a shelter. My vet can treat the heartworms for almost $300. I was wondering if anyone has it in their heart to make a donation for Ben to my vet to help us cover vet costs. If you are interested, please call my vet at 919-851-4114 and tell them you want to donate money to "Ben" that Jeremi Clark rescued. We are not going to keep this dog but we want him to be healthy before we adopt him out.
thank you all! 7/9/2007 2:35:31 PM |

I had a situation similar to this. We had a vet do a free checkup on a dog we found, and it was HW positive. We then took the dog to a Petsmart vet, and signed him up for the best Insurance plan. He of course tested positive, but we got him treated for less than $100.00 and cancelled the plan after the dog found a home. 7/9/2007 5:18:20 PM |

I'm not so sure what is wrong with a shelter. I recently adopted a dog from the one in Durham. The dog was Heartworm positive so they were asking an extra $140 donation to help cover the costs.
When I went to go pick her up someone else had already sponsored her. Either way she would have been taken care of. I'm not happy to see all of those animals in the shelter, but at least the APS in durham seems to really care.

I think Odie is looking to adopt the dog to someone he can meet in person and approve of, which is understandable. 7/9/2007 5:39:31 PM |

Yes I am. I have been doing rescue long enough to know you have to be picky about who adopts the dogs or else they just show up right back in bad situations or in a shelter.
Just a side note, this Odie is a chick. I will check into the Banfield thing. 7/9/2007 6:01:17 PM |

good luck with him
I wish I had $ to help you out
I've spent $$$ on all my past rescues and fosters. Every penny was worth it though when I think of how happy they (and their new owners) are. 7/9/2007 6:11:54 PM |

I'd shop around at vets. A lot of them will give you discounts for rescue animals. Of course, if you're one of their regulars it'd probably be easier to get a rescue discount. The family I sit for rescued a cat and their vet neutered and declawed it for free since they saved it from the streets. 7/9/2007 6:56:32 PM |

if you can't afford a $300 treatment for your dog, you have NO business owning one in the first place. people need to learn that pets can be expensive and if you are going to take one in, you need to be able to afford for their care without begging for handouts from others.
learn some damn responsibility 7/9/2007 9:21:14 PM |

while he's wrong in that it wasnt taken in for fun, she does need to realize you cant just rescue every dog and then refuse to give it up until you "find the right person" if you cant afford it. it isnt overly responsible for anyone involved. 7/9/2007 9:27:35 PM |

First off, Smath this isn't MY dog. I have 3 of my own. I am trying to get help for this dog. Cyrion, I guess you would have expected me to let the dog loose and either, knock up all the intact bitches around here or get hit by a car or die of heartworms.
I am not trying to start a war on here. I just asked for a little help because I know a lot of people on here do rescue. For those of you that just want to criticize me, don't waste your time.
Thank you joe 7/10/2007 7:20:33 AM |
