Ok so I lost my only set of keys, and have contacted the dealorship to find out that I am going to have to tow my car in and let them cut a key(s) and instal the chip within the key and reconfig the entire computer shit that interacts with the key. Is my only option to pay 600

I'd think seriously about a new car

$600 is absurd, but I'd say it's probably your only option

It's a laser cut key, plus if it was like mine it has the door/trunk openers on the back of it.
Good luck trying to sell a car with no key, this is one of those live and learn moments.

I hope $600 gets you a "set" of keys so you don't have to go through all of this again...

haha, doubt it. after I got mine cut they said it'd be about $200 for a copy w/ the door/trunk opener, can't remember how much i paid but I had them make me a valet type key.

after seeing taxicabs that were brand new without chip keys and steering columns that looked just like the ones in my 05 F-150, I'm wondering if I can't put that kind of switch in it. Has anybody done this?

well my plan is to..

get Triple A, for the year @ 69$ this will cover the tow to the dealorship. Then I will pay approx. 550 for a reconfig of the computer system and a set of two keys. Pretty much I am screwed out $600

depends on the service team but yeah, that sucks.
esp. since Lexus probably says it takes 6-8 hours to do total, but a really good tech. and team can probably have the keys cut, programmed etc. in 2 hours.

lexus claimed to not be able to make a key for my dad's '97 LS400 which was bought from a body shop who bought it from an auction. we only have the one backup key. know if there's any truth to this?

Maybe there was something fishy with the VIN or title.

tchenku, it's lies. you can cut keys for anything. all they need is the vin.

programming is easy, cutting keys is easy, pretty much it's a huge rip off.

i usually ask for a bunch of keys when i buy a car, laser cut or not.

they'll throw them in to make a sale.

1. make cheap non-chip copies
2. hide chip key in dash
3. ...
4. profit
