I saw there was another thread about a Lexus, but how much do ya'll think it would cost to get a door key made for a 99 Deville. I'm eyeing a no reserve on ebay.

called dealer 35 for ignition, 7 for door.

^yeah, door keys are going to be as cheap as any "normal" key. they don't have the VATS chip like the ignition key.

^yep. passkey and passkey II have resistors in the key. passkey III incorporates the chip into the plastic fob and uses an exciter ring on the ignition switch.

it's really all beside the point though, since he was asking about a DOOR key.

yea i had to wire a resistor into the wiring harness for the ignition in the vette cause the contacts to the resistor were so wore out it wouldnt work..

^you thought wrong. deville didn't switch to passkey III until 2000. even at that, the chip can't be that far away from the ignition and work.

^^yep, it's easy on passkey/passkey II stuff. multi meter to check the resistance of the key resistor, go pay a few cents for a resistor from radio shack, wire it in, profit! iirc, there were only like 10-15 different resistor values used.

i was responding to your comment about them still having to be close by, i know that in my experience they work a few feet out. so on keys with a chip it will reach behind the dash.

and i know he was looking for door locks, my comment was a general suggestion about how to keep the expensive key from getting damaged so he could use the door key. but i thought they were done with that embedded resistor crap. (i mean there is only 15, whats even the point)

the point is you didn't have any business responding to the thread in the first place because you don't know what you're talking about. any way you look at it, your comments were useless for anything cadillac or gm in general. see, you're still doing it:

i'd be glad to know how you plan to use the door key in the ignition. wanna shed some light on that? magically re keying the cylinder maybe?

like i said, even IF it was a keypass III vehicle (it's not) with the chip in the fob, they won't work inches from the ignition, much less feet.

i mean, i'm real happy that the ford you've tried this on worked. that doesn't mean everything else works the same way, so quit posting it in every key thread.

with any key/lock there is a given number of tumblers, and with any given number of tumblers there is a finite number of individual keys that can be made, lets say one million. add one of a set of 15 hard to duplicate resistors into the key and individual keys goes to 15million. not to mention the obvious anti theft benefits...

thats the point.

jesus christ, no shit sherlock ive copied a gazillion keys and rekeyed locks. i know how they work. there are only 15 resistors, my point was that it does not add very much security. with the key-pass ii and other rfid you have millions of combinations (although i guess they are fairly easy to read/copy if you have the equipment)

positive, you can get a resistorless blank for that car. it may not be listed if you look up the car in the ilco catalog, but its the same as the older keys.

wrong. the door and ignition use two different keys. so how are you going to use the door key in the ignition again?

Step 1, get a copy of door key made/order a key bank if needed

Step 2, if you NEED an ignition key, either do the resistor trick internally or if its rfid stash the current key in the steering column casing AFTER making multiple NO CHIP, NO resistor copies of the key.
You can now take your generic ignition key, turn the ignition, it will see the resistor/rfid and start. Result? if you lose the no chip ignition key you are out a few bucks, not 30+

It didn't have a door key. Sketch I know. Would cost $7 when they used the key code.

Fred if I bought that caddy I would have changed my name to Jase. Then I would tint it out.

Actually I wanted to buy it, turn around and sell it and make a buck.
