Going to visit friends in NYC and Ithaca, but making a day trip to Boston from NYC. What's some good stuff to do during the day? Maybe good Lunch/Dinner spots and some touristy stuff for first time visitors. Most of the old threads are dead or about the traffic or living there, but I'm just visiting. Thanks.

Quincy Market is a great place for lunch and people watching if you're into that kinda thing and there's always entertainment around lunchtime between the buildings.

Touristy shops are everywhere... you could walk the Freedom Trail if you like Historical stuff. Good luck and have fun!

I am up here in Boston now. I have asked locals the same question, and the one common response is go to a red sox game. I haven't yet, but you might check if theres a game that day.

you do realize that with good traffic, NYC to Boston is an 8-hour round trip? might want to at least stay overnight

Well I'm in NYC for 8 days and I've already visited my friend there before...so we thought we'd do something different besides getting drunk in NYC and waking up late. Thinking about going to Ithaca for one weekend and spending most of our time in NYC and a day trip to Boston.

Boston is not a day trip and you will be kicking yourself when you're driving through the middle of the night.

if you want Irish Pubs go to Woodside, Queens. Its filled with irish people and places they drink at.

or better yet Irish Haven in Sunset Park. I heard its were they filmed the Departed bar scenes. I also heard they have $3.50 pints of guinness. 58th st and 5th ave in Brooklyn.

There is a bus that goes from Chinatown in NYC to Chinatown in Boston for $20 and vice versa. Not the best accomadations, but damn cheap and direct.

I also highly recommend Quincy Market. Take a stroll through Boston Common and take a duck boat tour. One of my FAVORITE places is Harvard Square. They have tons of stores, restaurants, bars, outside musicians, ect. An all-around fun place to go. Also try Newbury Street. It's the birthplace of Newbury Comics and is usually a great place for shopping and people watching. Hope that helps!

Plus Quincy Market. Duck Boat Tour is fun drunk. Cambridge is great. Made the mistake of taking the T there, then staying too late, and having to walk back. Fun walk though. Little Italy is alright. I'm a partial UU, so i know half the people on Beacon Hill. Some nice B and Bs in that area. Cool rowhouses. If you like shopping, and/or crazy stores go to Boylston Street, or around that area.

^^BobbyDigital is right. You can't really "see" everything by any means in 8 days, in NYC.

yeh so it looks like we're spending the night in boston. Some great suggestions. Keep it coming. I've already been to nyc once so i've been and seen a lot. My friend has lived there for almost a year and still hasn't 'seen' everything.

Yeah that sucks balls. I don't think ALL bars in boston close at 1am, but either way Boston isn't known for its bars. It's cause of "public safety" and all those smart intellectuals need thier sleep.

Harvard and the whole Cambridge area are awesome though.

well according to people who know more about boston than i do, 1am is the standard closing time -- bars can stay open until two if they have a special permit, which most don't

i also recommend going on the sam adams brewery tour, we wanted to do the harpoon tour too but didn't have enough time

Plans changed and I can't go to Ithaca b/c my new job starts 2 weeks earlier than 1st thought. So we're gonna do a 2 day trip to boston...staying at the Langham hotel (got a good deal) so it should be fun and right near Harvard Square. Oh well thanks for all the suggestions!

^^Yeah realized that. But I just took the T over to it. Also went to quincy market. Had fun, but the place was a little whitewashed to me and the people there were stuck up. Took the Chinatown (Fung Wah) bus back and forth from NYC. $60 was all we paid for a round trip bus ride to Boston from nyc for 2 ppl.

^^ Boston's fun, but you really can't get a fair feel of the town over a day or two. I've found that people are stuck up everywhere, so don't assume it's just Boston.

Definitely take a bus or train. The T goes everywhere. If you can get tickets to a sox game (and you enjoy baseball) its a good time.

Travelling on the T is cheap too, especially compared to cabs. A week of unlimited ride is only $15. People should definitely come visit *hint*hint* I love company

I'll be up there the week of November 10. I'll be flying into Logan Monday morning, and staying in Billerica.

I need to entertain myself all day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Probably most of Friday, too.

Friday evening, and Saturday, and whatever time I have Sunday, my bf will have a car. I'm assuming that Mon - Thurs, I will be entirely on my own for transportation. I might be able to catch a ride to the commuter rail station in the mornings. Dunno yet.

So - suggestions? I'm assuming there's textile shit to see in Lowell, and might spend a day up there I may also be able to kill some time looking into some archives at UMass.

Most restaurants in Chinatown serve beer long after the last call. Just ask for "cold tea" and they'll bring you a teapot of beer.

Boston Kicks ass, so does Cambridge. I lived on MIT's campus this summer

My favorite things up there:

Walking... EVERYWHERE... don't take the T from place to place downtown, walk. It's very very easy to find your way around and see all kinds of cool stuff.

Take the T ferry from the Aquarium to Bunker Hill... it's like $2.75 (cash only ) and you can get GREAT shots of Boston from the water.

MIT museum... very cool stuff for nerds and non-nerds alike

right around the corner you can eat at
"Miracle of Science" in Cambridge... Really really chill grill... Great burgers and Skewers.

Goody Glovers Irish pub in the North End... Cheap and AWESOME

Wednesday Night Crossroads pub from 8-11:45 has "Buy a pitcher of beer and get a free pizza"

Walk along the river from The Harvard Bridge to the Longfellow Bridge... very worthwhile and affords great photos of Boston across the Charles.

There's a LOT more but those are the things I remember most that the public can do

I was just up in Boston 2 weekends ago for a marching band street festival- we stayed in Somerville (around Tufts) and it was awesome. Also wandered over to Harvard Square (in Cambridge?) for Oktoberfest, because, well, my band marched there.

I don't think we were sober for 5 days - lots of Irish pubs everywhere and good clam chowder. Also, the weather was perfect for this time of year.

The subway is kinda sketch, but can get you anywhere. We took it to the airport and back. They even have buses that run in old subway tunnels!
