What's the best possible way you could think of to rip down a tree[Edited on July 23, 2007 at 8:44 AM. Reason : .]
7/23/2007 8:43:04 AM
that would be a forestry question, they get them to the mill for us
7/23/2007 8:51:41 AM
do you hate email?
7/23/2007 8:52:10 AM
no, printing and writing grades are a small percentage of the overall industry production, but the computer age has increased demand more than everOn a side note, when purchasing printer paper, go by brightness, grammage, and coatingFor example, I was recently in Staples, and they had 6 brands on the shelf, anything from "high quality inkjet" to cheap no-name reams, that I know for a fact come off the same line, with no difference between them, and the boxes ranged from $18-$32. People just like flashy packaging.
7/23/2007 8:59:16 AM
i hate paper.
7/23/2007 9:01:37 AM
^ do you wipe with your thumb?
7/23/2007 9:01:54 AM
what the fuck is PSE?
7/23/2007 9:03:41 AM
paper science engineering?/probable [fail]
7/23/2007 9:09:12 AM
Paper Science and Engineering, it's basically an extremely specialized chemical engineering
7/23/2007 9:12:46 AM
what is the largest single paper consuming industry?I am going to guess1) toilet paper/paper towel2) printer/office supply paper3) newspaper
7/23/2007 9:20:12 AM
packaging
7/23/2007 9:22:33 AM
damn
7/23/2007 9:23:13 AM
corrogated packaging is the largest in volume, and also they highest % recycled, about 80% of cardboard is recycled[Edited on July 23, 2007 at 9:27 AM. Reason : ]
7/23/2007 9:25:19 AM
whats the deal with those damn 3 sea shells
7/23/2007 9:36:19 AM
7/23/2007 9:37:55 AM
^ nope, still the same, I'm probably gonna graduate next May or August, and already have 4 job offers on the table, 1 of which is in China
7/23/2007 9:40:25 AM
i, personally, would like to throw a chain around a tree and watch this monster rip it down
7/23/2007 2:13:17 PM
can i punch you?
7/23/2007 2:28:04 PM
^^ like the truckwhy can't or dont they make paper out of something other then trees?[Edited on July 23, 2007 at 5:24 PM. Reason : truck]
7/23/2007 5:23:09 PM
i was told cause hemp is illegal
7/23/2007 5:24:48 PM
7/23/2007 5:26:41 PM
we are doing research on it now, can't really get into the proprietary info, but it is possible to make paper out of wheat straw, flax, corn stalks, cotton, hemp, bagasse, bamboo, and even cow shit and chicken feathers, we have done some crazy shit over the years, but economics lean towards wood
7/23/2007 5:27:28 PM
have wood prices been on the rise over the years as we keep cutting down more trees?[Edited on July 23, 2007 at 5:28 PM. Reason : and will that lead to other ways being used if the price keeps going up?]
7/23/2007 5:28:25 PM
actually the largest increas in recent years has been since hurricane katrina increased the demand for lumber in the southeast, spiked timber prices about 15%, but yall keep asking me forestry questions[Edited on July 23, 2007 at 5:30 PM. Reason : is no one curious about specifically how paper is made?]
7/23/2007 5:30:17 PM
So what is it that they use all those sulfates for in the papermaking process? I know it helps strengthen the paper, but chemically, what is it doing?
7/23/2007 5:30:42 PM
The kraft pulping process uses Na2S, NaOH, and CaCO3. The sulfidity helps to stop the peeling reaction which breaks down the cellulose, while the NaOH breaks down the lignin, leading to higher yield and fiber strength.[Edited on July 23, 2007 at 5:34 PM. Reason : ^ you can always do PSE too, dual major ftw]
7/23/2007 5:33:08 PM
I'm already getting two degrees, but I thought about doing PSE when I was a freshman.
7/23/2007 5:36:18 PM
what is the one thing you think people should know about paper?
7/23/2007 5:37:12 PM
7/23/2007 5:46:33 PM
HmmmHmmm.....
7/23/2007 5:58:37 PM
Why do pulp and paper mills smell so bad?[Edited on July 23, 2007 at 6:02 PM. Reason : ]
7/23/2007 6:02:30 PM
Actually the worst smell that most people associate with is the H2S from the effluent treatment ponds, but some of the older mills still release some Na2S when blowing the digesters.
7/23/2007 9:22:09 PM
If I ever drive by Weyerhaeuser I make doubly sure the windows are all up and the air is on recirculate.
7/23/2007 10:15:33 PM
thats weak, i don't even notice the smell anymore, it's 20 times more concentrated in a lab environment doing liquor titrations
7/23/2007 10:18:06 PM
*throws up*
7/23/2007 10:20:20 PM
how do they make charmin ultra so soft?
7/24/2007 9:22:05 AM
7/24/2007 9:59:35 AM
its a byproduct of anaerobic bacteriamost mills have a three stage effluent system, a primary clarifier to remove suspended solids, an anaerobic treatment pond to remove organic waste, an aerobic treatment pond to reduce the BOD, and some have a quaternary clarifier to reduce color[Edited on July 24, 2007 at 10:15 AM. Reason : usually the airborne levels are no higher than a sewage treatment plant]
7/24/2007 10:14:21 AM
what kind of paper holds the tobacco in on a cigarette?
7/24/2007 10:26:43 AM
flax
7/24/2007 10:27:34 AM
how much recycled paper do we(americans or the world i guess) use...seems like with ALL the notebook paper, and ALL the newspapers, and phone books and cigarettes, etc...seems like with all that, that the world supply of trees would run out soon[Edited on July 24, 2007 at 10:37 AM. Reason : and text books]
7/24/2007 10:37:34 AM
actually no, an average pulpwood size southern yellow pine or douglas fir is 20 years old, and there is enough forest land in the us to sustain lumber and paper neweds for 50+ years, so it is a renewable resourcebrazil is currently using genetically altered eucalyptus trees that can grow to pulpwood size in <5 years
7/24/2007 10:43:38 AM
i know this is more of a tree question but why doesnt the US use genetically altered trees?
7/24/2007 10:57:53 AM
if we had brazil's soil, we could get fast growth pine to shoot up like that too.
7/24/2007 11:05:33 AM
do you know trick
7/24/2007 11:06:28 AM
i thought brazils soil was turning shitty cause of all the slash and burn farming?like its good for a few years but they take all the nutrients out and then have to cut down more forest, in a cycle
7/24/2007 11:07:15 AM
USDA won't approve it, we've had the technology for years here at NCSU[Edited on July 24, 2007 at 11:10 AM. Reason : jackasses]
7/24/2007 11:09:47 AM
wow I was following along pretty well until
7/24/2007 11:20:49 AM
^^WTF?!?!? why wont they?...have they not seen what good its doing for the brazilians?
7/24/2007 11:23:13 AM
