I am looking to get one of these digital camera's, but I can't seem to figure out which one I want. I know there are other threads about digital cameras in general, but this is specifically about these two.

They were realeased at the exact same time and relatively have the same features. The SD750 (arguably the nicer of the two and $50 more) uses a 3 inch LCD screen and to frame shots and doesnt have a viewfinder at all, whereas the SD1000 uses a 2.5 inch and has a very small viewfinder. I have read lots of things on both, and the decision about which is better is mixed on different sites.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Is there another Canon series that I should be looking at, like the Canon A530 or something like it?

Any help would be great.

1000 has an optical viewfinder, 750 doesn't
750's LCD is 3", 1000's is 2.5"
750 is a tad smaller and 5g lighter
1000 has IS (image stablization), 750 does not *as far as I can find*

I have an SD900 and it doesn't have image stabilization... its a 10MP camera and I REALLY REALLY wish it had image stabilization. Full res pictures you can almost always see a little shake where you pushed the button down.

The viewfinder on all my elphs(sd100 {lost} s400 {thought died but was just memcard} sd900{current}) has been a little awkward so I just never use it...

I LOVE the elph line b/c you can fit it easily in your pocket, there are now a lot of cameras that you can do this with, but the cannon optics take really good pictures for a compact camera... I wouldn't purchase a powershot Aseries b/c if I couldn't stick my camera in my pocket I wouldn't ever take it anywhere.

Summery: Go with the one with image stabilization... the viewfinder/oversized screen isn't really nearly as important

the SD800 is just a newer 750 with a smaller screen.

just this past week, bestbuy.com had the 850IS for 284, just keep a lookout for that kind of value, its worth it

I was looking at those two cameras as well and ended up buying the SD1000. They are essentially the same camera and I went with the SD1000 because it just felt better in my hand. The circle rocker on the SD750 is tiny and hard to use and overall just an odd design. I have no complaints so far about the SD1000 and it takes great pictures.

I'll also vouch for image stabilization. I recently picked up a Canon S3 IS, and the image stabilizer is extremely helpful. Don't expect it to do much at long zoom lengths (but then again what's the max zoon on most of the SD series, like 4x?)

Also agree with the statement about avoiding the A-series because of their bulk. The SD cameras have essentially the same feature availability as do the A models, but are more expensive because of the small size. Being able to slip into a pocket is a great convenience feature--it's why I kept my S400 after getting the S3, which doesn't have a chance in hell to fit in anything except a large jacket pocket.

I was also mad that I didn't go hold the SD900 before buying it on newegg... its as thick as my s400 is... most of the others seem to be a bit thinner...

but 10MP pictures do absolutely kick ass when it comes to details

ok, to reiterate, NEITHER of these have the Image Stabilizer, so lets get off that topic all together.

Looking at the reviews of these two, they are really a complete wash. It's going to be a gift for my wife, so I need to go in and look at them to see what she would do better with.

As I recommended to my2cents, who was looking at these two cameras.

Go pick up a Sony DSC-T20 or DSC-W80/W90. They are both a shit-brick ton better and at the same pricepoints. Just hope they dont have the T-100 or W200 sitting next to them, or you will end up dropping the extra 120-150 bucks on them.

Seriously, Canon makes shitty ultra-compacts. Sony makes great ones.

I've always loved the picture quality(short of the need for IS at high res) and the battery life of my canons... and I've dropped them SOOO many times and they keep trucking wiht no effects. They have always taken amazing pictures...

It seems strange to hear sony being the way to go for anything... but I dunno I haven't looked at camera's in a while.

I wouldn't use the words "shitty" as an adjective for canon camera's... there are a LOT of shitty camera's on the market, see kodak, cheap nikons(battery life is pathetic as is build quality), and any no-name brand... I'm not making the arguement Cannon vs Sony @ price, I'm saying canons aren't shitty...

yea its only shitty in a direct comparion between it and the sony line. they aren't terrible. and if i found a crazy slickdeal on an sd1000 again I'd probably spring for it

I just got back from Best Buy and to look at the difference between the two.

I love the SD750 and the crystal clear images of the LCD screen. The pics were noticably better on the 750 than the 1000.

Yes, the 1000 has a viewfinder, but it is easily the smallest viewfinder I have ever seen. I had to squint just to get a halfway decent glimpse through the finder.

Top that off with the fact that they are the same price this week at Best Buy, and the decision has been made. I am getting the SD750.
