3.0 miles round trip, I head from my place, loop around at the dog park in Cary, and head back, I guess good training for a 5k eh? Has what I like to call "the dead zone," where there's absolutely no breeze or anything and it's in direct sunlight and I'm going up a hill. It's killer. I'm so out of shape.

USATF has a better applet for doing this...it will also show you an elevation profile of your route, and no tinyurl needed.

It should have a calculator to estimate how much energy it takes to run the route, then one could optimize a running routine to have the biggest payoff

if you wanted it to be accurate you'd have to take into account weight, metabolism, speed, slope, temperature, etc--it'd be a bitch 7/29/2007 2:25:59 PM |
Lowjack All American 10491 Posts user info edit post |
^Yes, those would be input parameters. It wouldn't be a bitch -- it would just be more work than multiplying 2 numbers together.
[Edited on July 29, 2007 at 2:28 PM. Reason : Don't need metabolism. Without it, you at least get a minimum bound on how much energy you use.] 7/29/2007 2:27:12 PM |

I run at probably the slowest pace that could possibly be considered technically running, e.g. one foot on the ground at a time. It's sad, really, considering I used to play an entire regulation soccer game in highschool as a defender without substitution. 7/29/2007 2:28:38 PM |

I run the western side of the Lake Johnson route 2x + .75 miles clockwise (which apparently is the wrong way to do it... ahahah) starting at the back parking lot by the dam
comes out to 6.39 miles (over 10km)
very cool dynamic run 7/29/2007 2:35:28 PM |

dont do it twice but i do also go clockwise....i always wondered if it was the "wrong" way...i'd say out of ever 10 people, maybe 3 of them go clockwise and 7 go counter clockwise...i park at the small parking lot near the dam also7/29/2007 3:52:31 PM |

to be fair, the numbers DO go in that direction
i just ran it with my dad a while ago and he told me it was strange to go in that direction
that runners typically run counterclockwise
so... 7/29/2007 3:55:03 PM |

honestly i go clockwise cause i want to go towards the hills first...once you are done with the hills, its the bridge and marina thing, and the rest of the path til you get back to the dam is fairly flat 7/29/2007 4:53:44 PM |

there's lots of good run/ride mapping sites http://favoriterun.com http://walkjogrun.net http://mapmyrun.com <--- this one has a "follow roads" feature that allows you to click on roads at various places and it completes the route in between the clicks by following the road. It's much faster than clicking at every little turn.
if you run with a GPS, http://motionbased.com is a good place to upload and analyze your GPS routes (others like mapmyrun and gmap-pedometer, i think, will also accept GPS files)
------ here are some of my past runs and routes
- a 12 miler at Umstead starting at the Harrison entrance - http://favoriterun.com/89706 - the Old Reliable 10k in downtown Raleigh - http://favoriterun.com/86244 - here's 2 5k's in Asheville - http://favoriterun.com/71563 , http://favoriterun.com/55908 - 3 miles around lake Johnson - http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/nc/cary/429242566 - here's a bitch of a 16 miler in western NC i did for marathon training. check out the elevation charts - http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/2175519
- The Myrtle Beach Marathon - http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/2091709 - 18 miles at Umstead, starting at Harrison entrance - http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/1899112 - 9 miles on the Cary Greenway > Crabtree from my office - http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/1881184 - Anyone who ran Cross Country in NC in high school will recognize this one. It's the 5k course at McAlpine Park in Charlotte - http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/1972407 - A 4 mile loop i did at my old house in Holly Springs - http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/1881180 - my favorite running course ever. 16 miles on the Bass Lake trails in Blowing Rock. I did this run (or parts of it) all the time in High School and was able to do it again last winter with my GPS. I only wish Google Maps had better satellite coverage up there http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/1810686

Not exactly tinyurl, but shouldn't be a problem. This is a run that I do several times a week from my house. I basically just walk out the door and run in a big circle and then come back. 7/30/2007 3:54:38 AM |

that's a big BIG negative, and anyone who runs any real distance will agree that going around a fucking circle 6.5 times for a mile (or ever 4 times for that matter) sucks the biggest sack you can possibly imagine
even though I will do it if the weather forces me, I HATE running in the gym7/30/2007 3:05:57 PM |

I had one of the dumbest "professors" (i.e. gym teachers) ever in 2001 when I took Run Conditioning. We did most of our runs on the indoor track, and the final 5k "exam" on the indoor track too. Someone asked if we could run on the outdoor track for the final 5k, and he said "no, the indoor track is much faster, so I think you'll be happier with your time if we do it inside." That statement is wrong on so many levels….. 7/30/2007 3:49:24 PM |

Quote : | "Nude jogger gets 30 days in jail
July 13, 2007 -- ASSOCIATED PRESS
A 49-year-old man who told police his life lacked excitement was sentenced to 30 days in jail for running while wearing only a stocking cap, gloves and reflective tape.
Russell Rotta acknowledged to police that he had been running naked since he was a teenager and generally woke up each day around 4 a.m. to conceal his activity from his wife.
The Blackman Township resident pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent exposure May 22 in Jackson County district court. Judge Joseph Filip also sentenced him Tuesday to 24 months probation and $1,500 in fines and costs.
Rotta was arrested early April 4 after a caller reported seeing a naked man running in the southbound lane of U.S. Highway 127 in Blackman Township, north of Jackson and about 70 miles west of Detroit.
In the police report, the responding officer wrote that he recalled several reports over the years of a naked man running in the area. The officer said he spotted Rotta by his shoe reflectors as he attempted to cross a road.
The man was arrested following a foot chase.
Rotta told police he didn't indulge his habit to disturb anyone or receive sexual gratification and generally confined his running to open fields and wooded areas away from roads.
He wore reflective tape around his arms, ankles, waist and thighs to avoid being hit when he crossed roads, the police report said.
Rotta reported running in the nude six miles a day every day, weather permitting.
"That is the one wild, crazy thing that I do that makes me feel alive," police quoted him as saying
