So I am curious if there is a way to set it up so that you can get the local channels from a different state, like say NY. I really think that there is a way to do this since it all comes from the same satellite. I guess you would need to make the changes to the card, but not sure.
Know anything about this? Thanks. 8/3/2007 11:36:45 PM |

you should be able to get all the local channels regardless. 8/4/2007 12:21:06 AM |

I think if you change your zip code during the setup, it pulls different local channels... i'm not sure though. 8/4/2007 2:19:03 AM |

^ that's actually what I was thinking. If I could change my location to NYC I could get all the Giants games in HD and not have to pay all that money for the football package. I am going to have to try this out and see if it actually works. If anyone knows anything more let me know. 8/4/2007 6:21:05 PM |

Dish Network let us add WWOR several years ago ala cart to our package in Asheville, as I wanted to watch Enterprise and the local stations didn't carry it at the time. Not sure about now though. 8/4/2007 6:36:23 PM |

With DirecTV, they are usually only allowed to provide you with the local channels of the market you live in. If you're in fringe areas, you can often receive locals for the adjoining market. My parents receive Greensboro and Roanoke locals on DirecTV. To receive other local channels, you'd have to hack the card. 8/5/2007 4:47:32 PM |

^ It still goes on, but it's not nearly as easy and widespread as it once was back in the 90s and around 2000. From what I understand, it's a real pita now. 8/6/2007 2:06:28 PM |

it's a lot harder with hacked cards. Every so often the satellites will send a message to the boxes to overwite any card that isn't legit if the card isn't read only. If it's read only existing cards will be upgraded and the hacked cards will fail to work since it isn't updated.
on a side note, when time warner makes it where I'm at, I'm gonna invite everyone over for target practice on the directv dish and boxes.
