I dont know if anyone has posted about this or not, but I searched and didn't find anything...
I was curious if anyone had been getting into the custom song scene at all for Guitar hero. By replacing a few certain files in the game's infrastructure with your own personally made (or downloaded from the internet) note charts and songs, you can play pretty much any song you want.
I know they've had the guitar hero clones for your computer and stuff, but they never really felt satisfying. This is as close as you can get, I think, seeing as how it's the actual game.
Im currently in the process of putting together my own track list ith the following songs:
Quote : | "1. Opening Licks
Opeth - The Leper Affinity Blue Oyster Cult - Burnin; for You Blind Melon - No Rain Opeth - Black Rose Immortal Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings
2. Amp-Warmers
RHCP - Under the Bridge Offspring - Damnit I Changed Again Nerf Herder - Love Sandwich The Toadies - Possum Kingdom Radiohead - My Iron Lung
3. String-Snappers
The Darkness - I Believe in a Thing Called Love Opeth - Ghost of Perdition Spin Doctors - Little Miss Cant be Wrong Blues trav - Carolina Blues RATM - Freedom
4. Thrash and Burn
Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower Rammstein - Links Slipknot - Sic Offspring - Come Out and Play Dragonforce - My Spirit Will Go On
5. Return of the Shred
Paramore - misery Business No Doubt - Just a Girl Mighty Morphon Power Rangers Theme SRV - Pride and Joy Ramones - Blitzkreig Bop
6. Relentless Riffs
OK Go - Here it Goes Again One Winged Angel - Advent Children Ozzy - Crazy Train SoaD - Hypnotize Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
7. Furious Fretwork
Cake - Short Skirt Lonely Train - Black Stone Cherry SoaD - BYOB Jerry C - Canon Rock The Final Countdown - Europe 8. Face-Melters

Some of the songs were on a previous custom build, while most of the others were songs that I have and the note charts were available on the internet. I am also doing a few custom note charts for songs that I really want to play. On that list above, the ones I'm making are Pride and Joy, Shipping Up to Boston, Happie as Annie, Bad Devil, and the live version of Black Friday Rule from the Whiskey on a Sunday album... the one that's 12 minutes long.
It's interesting because one thing you learn when compiling a custom Guitar Hero disc is that some of your favorite songs are boring and would be no fun to play and other songs you don't really like can be really challenging and fun songs. It takes a while to put the discs together, but it's definitely worth it to anyone who has played out both GH1 and GH2.
It's important to note that most of the songs available on the custom scene are expert only, though you can find easier tracks and make them even easier using your own note editor. You also (as far as I know) need a modded PS2 to play the custom discs (I dont think you can do this with the 360 version). The process itself is completely legal, assuming you have all the songs yourself, and don't go downloading them off the internets. The process is even, as I've heard it, supported by the GH game companies as a way to boost awareness and support for the games.
All in all, I would recommend this to anyone who just has that list of songs that they absolutely want to play on Guitar Hero. Shoot me an email or PM or something if you want some of the note charts and stuff that I'm working on (not done yet, though). The rest you can find online at the link listed below, as well as a plethora of other information as far as changing game titles and editing random bits of text around the game, including load tips and menu options.

"the effort"
Yeah. A lot of the software used to do the customization is homebrew and honestly pretty shitty. It's real easy to mess up stuff. Writing custom note charts also takes about 10 hours for a hard song, but I'll have to admit, when you sit down to play it, its all worth it. 8/7/2007 12:30:19 PM |

I don't know the specifics of the law, but Wikipedia says, "It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services that are used to circumvent measures that control access to copyrighted works."
By that standard, couldn't they send Dell to jail.
*sigh*
Stupid, intentionally vague laws... 8/7/2007 12:52:14 PM |

The GH guys will support it as long as it remains small and niche. If it ever became large enough to make a difference in sales (highly unlikely), the cease and desist letters would be on the way.

so why exactly doesnt the people that make guitar hero do this?...the first time i played the game i asked someone like "do they have a way to put songs you want in the game?"
seems like the game would be a billion times better if you could put songs you actually want in...and it also seems like it shouldnt be that hard to do that... 8/7/2007 4:04:14 PM |

^^^In order to put songs in the game they have to acquire certain rights to the songs. If they let users do it, the individual user would have to get the rights to the song for it to be legal. 8/7/2007 4:48:30 PM |

The only thing I can think of is that they might reduce the sales of the new games with newer songs. It also might be that most people don't have hard drives, and you would need something like that to do it on the PS2. I could see it on the 360 though.

Ive been working charting the Flogging Molly track for the last couple days. Because of this, I've had the song stuck in my head for that long. I'm pretty sure that, by the time I'm done with the song, I'll not want to hear it for a long time. 8/8/2007 12:41:29 AM |

I don't know if you've ever noticed, but the songs on GH2 aren't original, they are covers. So I would assume the whole idea behind preventing customization is song copyrights. I'm sure red octane would love having the RIAA breathing down their necks.

Not all of the songs are covers, a few use the original master recordings. They still have to have the rights to the song in order to cover it. Guitar Hero III and Rock Band will supposedly have many more master recordings. I think most of the songs they have already revealed are master recordings, thanks to new deals with MTV and record companies.
Oh, and Possum Kingdom is one of my favorite songs to play on the 360 version. Good choice.8/8/2007 9:14:50 AM |

This is cool and all, and I might consider doing it if it wasn't so time-consuming. If I'm going to spend 10 hours working on something musical, I'm going to be sitting down with the portastudio writing songs, not transcribing someone else's stuff for a game. 8/8/2007 9:20:12 AM |

yeah, thats the frustrating thing...
but, the way I sortof look at it is that I'm using all these 40 or 50 other note charts tat people have spent a collected hundreds of hours on, I could give somethign back by writing mine and posting them for other people to use, especially if they are songs that i really really want to hear.
Granted, I did pick hard, erratic, long songs. Had I picked easier, studio songs with repeated rhythms and a steadier beat, it would only have taken me about 2 to 3 hours, but playing these songs I'm working on, in the end, will be much more rewarding. 8/8/2007 11:14:08 AM |

yea its an interesting idea. and the concept of the game and gameplay is super fun. but to me personally once it starts taking hours to do something, i feel like it would be more rewarding to learn the actual instrument than learn how to play it on guitar hero after a few hours. 8/8/2007 11:42:03 AM |

So, I finished putting together the full GH Custom build, and it was a huge pain in the ass. There are still a few bugs, and the audio levels on some of the songs are off, but hopefully I can figure out how to fix all this over the next week or two.
I went in and changed a lot of the game text, the characters names and bios, etc.
One of the neat things that I did was rename the difficulties to people who often play with me who are at that difficulty. I.E. The friend who blows is the "easy" level, etc.
Oh, and I also did a third custom song, "Happy as Annie" by Larrikin Love. It was easy. It only took me like 40 minutes but its fun to play. 8/15/2007 2:40:31 AM |
