there have always been certain bands/artists that i've always felt i should get into but never did. tom waits was #1 on that list and i've recently been listening to him a lot. now i know what i've been missing out on, wow.
are there any bands/artists like that for you? 8/7/2007 3:24:34 PM |

^^^ its been awhile since i did, but it did take me a good bit to get into the dismemberment plan too. then something clicked and ive loved them ever since ha.
this can further be related sort of to albums as well.
ie back in middle school i LOVED the deftones. i had both adrenaline and around the fur for basically all of middle school and 2 years of HS before they came out with a new album. by this point i was anticipating it so much..i got it and it was a big change. i didnt like it at all really. came back to it almost a year later and i loved it and still do 8/7/2007 4:47:10 PM |

hah that happened to me too
believe it or not this happened with me and radiohead a long time ago too.
I listened to creep and was like this rocks.
then i think i happened to pick fitter happier off ok computer and was like wtf is this shit. now they're one of my favorite bands.
same with Tool, when I saw em at bonnaroo I wasn't all that into em but liked a couple songs, couldn't really get into most of their stuff. now they're another one of my favorite bands.8/7/2007 5:56:30 PM |

Agreed--- although, I think Boxer is a little more accessible.
Animal Collective is one of those bands I'm still trying to get into, although, I'm not actively listening to their stuff enough to get into it. Either way, I would love some suggestions on what to check out. (other than sung tongs.... I have that one).
Panda Bear's Person Pitch was one that I didn't get at first and now, I fucking love it. I think I listened to "Bros" for an hour straight one point last weekend. Such a slow grower.
Midlake Van Occupanther was a slow grower for me in 2006, but ended up being my favorite album of that year.8/7/2007 11:41:50 PM |

I still have mixed feelings about interpol because most of their songs sound the same. Its a fucking awesome song however no matter how many times they repeat it.. 8/8/2007 1:53:32 AM |

Queen. When I was a kid and first listening to them after seeing Wayne's World for the first time, other than We Will Rock You and Bohemian Rhapsody, Freddie Mercury was just a little too weird for me.
The older I got, and the more into weird that I became, the more I liked Queen.

it took me a little while.
and for each walkmen album, i was obsessed with one song for a long time and i didn't listen to the other songs on the album, but after a number of months finally listened to the rest of it and really liked the other songs.

i think os mutantes' first record is instantly likeable. the first song on it "panis et circus" or something is one of my favorite songs right now.
Joanna Newsom and Sonic Youth both took a while to get into. and i didn't realize how much i like a lot of black metal until recently. 8/8/2007 3:14:18 PM |

yeah joanna newsom took me a while, especially Ys (that was my first introduction to her). i liked it from the beginning alright, but after a while i loved it.
seeing Ys performed live made me appreciate it a lot more.

Opeth. Not that it was hard for me to like them, but it takes many listens per album to fully appreciate the complexity of their music.

I'll second The National. They took a bit to grow on me but now it's awesome stuff.
I'll throw in Modest Mouse, old school. When I first listened to them for a while I couldn't get into it. Now i love their stuff, mostly the old school.
Oh, and it took me a little bit to get used to Sufjan Stevens. But by Illinois, I was sold.

Thanks--- I'll definitely check that one out. It seems that with stuff like AC and Panda Bear, if you try to listen for what other people like about it, then it escapes you. But, if you just relax and take it in, or even start off with it as background music for a completely separate task, you will one day find yourself loving it.
Or, at least that's how Panda Bear and other similar bands have found their way with me. Perhaps AC will be the same.8/9/2007 2:19:59 PM |
