"Unruly schoolboys or sex offenders?
FACTBOX

• What the law says
Sunday, July 22, 2007
SUSAN GOLDSMITH
The Oregonian Staff

The two boys tore down the hall of Patton Middle School after lunch, swatting the bottoms of girls as they ran -- what some kids later said was a common form of greeting.

But bottom-slapping is against policy in McMinnville Public Schools. So a teacher's aide sent the gawky seventh-graders to the office, where the vice principal and a police officer stationed at the school soon interrogated them.

After hours of interviews with students the day of the February incident, the officer read the boys their Miranda rights and hauled them off in handcuffs to juvenile jail, where they spent the next five days.

Now, Cory Mashburn and Ryan Cornelison, both 13, face the prospect of 10 years in juvenile detention and a lifetime on the sex offender registry in a case that poses a fundamental question: When is horseplay a crime?

AWESOME!
It's about time we cracked down on normalcy in the country. Abuse has long been a part of growing up on planet earth and we, as civilized persons, are bound to our humanity to address the issues of what is acceptable.
Personally, i think these two are lucky to be alive, acting like that in front of a police officer and all. And secondly, they shouldn't have been standing there

now only if we could crack down on the 5 million other middleschoolers and haul their asses to jail for what seems like an increasing (sharply) trend in crimes and stupidity among schoolchildren all over the country (and the world).

^ Indeed. This is ridiculous. Those kids shouldn't (and I hope, probably won't) go to jail.

By 7th grade, they should know not to go around randomly slapping girls on the ass.

I don't think they should go to jail, but some punishment is warranted.

They should definitely should have been kicked out of that school and sent to the bad kids school, or whatever they have for delinquents. A good couple hundred hours of community service would help too.

But juvy? Sex Offenders? Way out there. But "face the prospect" sounds to me like sensationalist reporting.

i did this for a whole year of middle school and it wasn't until may where 1 girl told on me. The vice principle called me to her office and told me not to do that and that was the end of it.

now that i think about it. what i did wasn't slapping. it was a more gentle grab, rub, grope or pinch and usually garnered a smile. The slapping is what probably pisses them off.

yeah it is the girls' fault, right? when a woman gets raped, it is her fault she was dressed too provocatively.
