i THINK my AC just needs to be recharged...that's still necessary for newer cars, right? it's a 2002 saturn sl1...the AC was working fine a few days ago, but recently it's been only working randomly...it blows just fine, and half the time it gets cold like it used to, but sometimes it just quits blowing cold air...i don't know much about it, but i'm HOPING that it just needs to be recharged 8/13/2007 12:08:22 PM |

youre gonna get what you pay for, cheapest will be bubba cracking open an AC line and venting it to atmosphere and then recharging your system with advance freon cans. call 4 brothers auto air on gresham lake road. 8/13/2007 12:11:12 PM |

it's never necessary unless something is wrong and the system is leaking.8/13/2007 12:12:17 PM |

i'm going to bet it is the compressor, not just needing to be recharged 8/13/2007 12:42:15 PM |

either a sensor or low on freon and pressures are getting too low so it cuts off the compressor. 8/13/2007 1:00:12 PM |

i bet rednecks saved over a million ounces of R12 in secret caches back around 2000 when it started getting scarce and since then probably 60% of it has leaked out of the containers and into the atmosphere. 8/13/2007 10:32:51 PM |

I know I bought every can I could find... I guess that puts me under the redneck category 8/13/2007 11:05:41 PM |

it was cheaper for me to retrofit to R-134a than to get R-12 8/15/2007 2:09:06 AM |

I've not had the best success rate with conversions. As you know, I deal with a lot of Japanese stuff, and one problem I've had is that a large percentage of the systems I do a retrofit on go to leaking very soon. One of the issues I've noticed is that most of the cars I've done have Nippondenso's 10P15C, 10PA15C, or 10PA17C compressors on them, and after a while, the front seal starts to leak. I had to charge my Teg rather frequently. The Dodge has a Denso C171 compressor on it, and it won't hold a charge for more than a week. My Celica GT-S (RWD) got to where it wouldn't hold for more than 3 days.
I've only had reasonable success with a few cars I've retrofitted. I did an '89 Celica GT, and it would freeze you to death. I actually replaced the compressor with a 10PA15C from a '96 Celica (which already came with R134) and flushed the system as well as I could. Replaced the receiver/dryer and dosed it with the correct amount of PAG 46 oil and replaced all the o-rings I could get to with HSN ones (green). I charged it using a scale, and made sure to do my density calcs to get the right amount (R134 is not as dense as R12). Bastard was COLD. 8/15/2007 5:46:57 PM |

darn, I was thinking of converting tRusty, but now it looks like I'll just make it on board air. 8/16/2007 9:34:13 AM |

i've yet to find anyone to take a look at this...now that i've been messing with it every day, i've determined that it ALWAYS starts out cold when i turn it on (i mean, aside from the initial period where it blows out hot air)...it gets just as cold as usual for 30 seconds to a minute, and then it starts blowing out regular air again...it does this every time...suggestions as to what it might be (i didn't know if this information might have clarified the situation)
it seems that if it works just fine for the first 30 seconds (in fact, if i turn it off for a while and then turn it on again, it does the same thing - cold at first, then after a while, hot), and then stops, it might be something a bit more easy to determine 8/29/2007 4:56:43 PM |

probably overcharged and the high pressure switch is cutting it out, would be simple to check, but i dont mess with that shit anymore 8/29/2007 4:58:33 PM |

yea, either high side getting too high or low side getting too low.. either way you need to get somebody to look at it before you fuck it up 8/29/2007 9:49:21 PM |
