I have a NEC DVD +/- RW 6650A on my Alienware laptop. When I put in a game or DVD it doesn't read it. Audio CDs seem to be fine when I open RealPlayer but they don't start automatically like they used to (or rather it would prompt me to chose a program to open it with). When I go into My Computer it doesn't show what disk is in the D: drive and when I click on properties it says File System: RAW which my roommate said was very unusual and likely to be the reason why it isn't reading it correctly.
When I put in a game that I already have installed that requires the disk it will still play but I have to go through the program. But I am unable to install a new game and when I click on the D: drive when a game or DVD is in it comes up blank as if nothing is there. I have not installed anything new aside from a Windows update so I am rather confused as to what could be causing this. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive itself but to no avail. 8/14/2007 9:29:39 PM |

Wow, I totally did misspell that but at the time the proper use of a dictionary was not exactly on the forefront of my mind. I bought a CD/DVD drive cleaning disc but that did not correct the problem. I am sure someone has run across this before.

Thinking it was a problem with the drive I bought an external cd-rom and as soon as I hooked it up the same exact thing happened. And after putting in my 2GB usb flash drive I had the same deal. So it looks like a problem with Windows and before I go wasting a day with a system restore I was hoping that some of your tech folks could shed some light. 9/26/2007 3:53:38 AM |

I've got a little registry fix that can sometimes fix CDROM issues. PM me and I can probably email it to you or something. It's something to try before you re-format. 9/26/2007 8:27:41 AM |
