so i got this phone and it's the first time i've ever used any mobile OS, and it's got Windows Mobile 6 on it.....what are some must have applications/programs?

The IE that comes on it sucks. I can't get webpages to shrink down and fit. Does Opera solve this? Also I've heard of Pocket Informant. Anything else?

Yeah, get opera.

Although, even that isn't going to be as good as a real browser.

Mobile IE is probably the best mobile browser you're going to get outside an iphone. Try setting it to single column display mode. This should force everything to the width of the screen.

Unless you wanna do the whole Microsoft exchange stuff, I'd suggest selling it for an iPhone. You'll love the Maps and the video player.

lol this is not an iPhone thread, so I'll only post this:

EDGE is not 56k.
It has WiFi.
WTF is a business PDA?

that's the only real site you need for the mogul/wm6 - plenty of threads on how to get wm6 setup the way you like it - just take some time to read before posting - typically any question you will have as a beginner can be found by searching - read the stickys

I  Google Maps for Mobile
Opera is what everyone recommends, but honestly I'm fine with standard IE - If you are not happy with it though, Opera is the best way to go.

in the smartphone world, ie pwns all browsers

windows live search is good too, and like google maps mobile, if you have gps on your phone you can locate yourself on the map

altho phm regeditor is free, i recommend resco regeditor - it costs 20 but i think its worth it

how often do you edit your registry to justify $20? you can do everything that you would want to do simply with phm in a matter of minutes - would you pay for an upgraded regedit for your desktop pc too?

i just like the look of it for the most part. desktop has one already why would you pay. the mobiles devices don't come with one, and i think because they want to limit you to what they put in the system so that you will upgrade your when a new mobile windows version comes out. and after looking at the wm6 demo, it really is not much different from wm5.

so phm does everything you want - but resco is prettier so you spend money on it?

i have to imagine they do the exact same thing, right? - admittedly i've never bothered using resco though

Here is a nice module for the Today screen with a better agenda. There are many useful freeware tools and utiltities available from this site.

http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=1475

I found a nice remote desktop program, too if I can l find where I pulled it from....

I'm a big fan of SBSH mobile software for enhancing the Today screen, contacts, weather, and lists. Other staples include the previously mentioned wififofum and PHM.

oh one more silly question, do you guys load all these apps on the main storage or sd card.....seems like if i put them on the sd card, then i always need the sd card connected and can't swap out

i load everything onto the device - some people use the storage card because some of the benchmarks say that things run faster from there - again i'd read ppcgeeks.com for this information...

i only load thing onto my card if they are over a certain size, around 1mb or more. but really my card is my backup for files, pics and vids, more so than apps.

Use the SD cards for storage of media and any apps that are non-essential or reference only... things like a dictionary, ebooks plus reader, games, novelty apps, etc. If there is something that you don't use every week then keep it off of the device.

I really liked Axim/MobilitySite for info but it is more geared towards PDAs.

thanks

you have to buy a gps receiver - you can get one for less than $50 by watching ebay for decent deals "bluetooth gps" should pull up some results

you will also need some software - i believe google maps works as a free solution but i haven't actually tried it - i use iGuidance

you need to download telenav and you need to pay them $15/month. at least, that's one way to do it. it's pretty cool. i particularly like that it knows the street names.

you may have a tough time getting the gps receiver for less than $75. i watched ebay for a while and lucked out on one for 55, but most were at least 75

For my Treo 700wx I have:
Windows Live Search
Google Maps
Slide2Unlock
Magic Button
PHM RegEdit
MortPlayer is a great MP3 player / Alarm utility
HButton (not sure if the 6800 does the same thing w/ custom button mapping)

my friend was telling me you can get GPS capability on the phone w/o hardware.

something about going to ringerpost.com and funformobile.com

i have no idea what he was talking about but i think this thread is talking about the same thing:
http://sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94462

it's a little over my head....anyone try this method?

hrmm possibly - with the 6800/mogul from what i've read you won't be able to do it without an external gps receiver - at the very least until the Rev A upgrade comes out and maybe not even then

you can find a torrent of iguidance or use google maps/windows live and buy a bluetooth gps receiver for pretty cheap for an arguably better solution (at least currently)

Just got a pantech duo with windows mobile 6. I really like the phone, and after a few days i've figured out some pretty cool stuff i can do with it, although i've felt like a complete dork walking around campus messing with it.

-2 gig micro SD cards are only 12$ on newegg!

-Installed Opera Mobile and it works great displaying full websites.

-Google Earth is pretty sweet. Thought the satellite maps would load a lot slower but they were really smooth.

-Trying out Palringo for aim. Any other good free ones out there?

-Youtube didn't work right off, but after installing TCPMP and a flash patch i was surprised how fast they streamed. There was no initial loading time and it just started the video in landscape mode. A lot more responsive than an iphone i was playing with, i guess due to the 3G network.

-Was trying to figure out a way to stream media to my cell and discovered Orb(winamp does this to), which allows me to stream any type of media from my desktop to my cell. Its able to test the bandwidth of the cell, and also convert to the correct resolution for streaming.

I was amazed when I clicked on an episode of The Office in 720p and it streamed very smoothly to my cell, and looked amazing. Music worked well despite a slight lag when skipping tracks. The most amazing thing was the programs ability to use my TV tuner and stream any channel to my cell phone. Also includes a guide with program descriptions. Never thought i'd be able to get cable tv on my phone for free.

This may be old news to a bunch of you guys, but it was a big step up from my 2 year old razor. Any other cool things i can do with this?

you are welcome

if you want to run java apps, this is a pain to install but tit works wells, according to a trusted forum. i don't have it installed, but i eventually will unless wm7 supports java right out of the box. http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/websphere/zones/wireless/weme_eval_runtimes.html

I absolutely love SPB apps.

http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/

I run both Mobile Shell and Pocket Plus on my 8525. They have demo versions which you can try out on the website. (And if you know where to look... you can find serials to register them. I actually bought both them when I rolled to Windows Mobile 6 since I've enjoyed them so much.)

Opera Mobile is SO much better than IE. The hassle with Opera Mobile is that if you do not want to purchase it, you have to download the installer and run it again every 30 days. Highly annoying. I cannot wait to see Firefox Mobile, but that's probably several months out.

haha, might want to learn a little something before you go spouting off shit you don't know.

You can get one for $399 brand new, a lot less on ebay used... POS? Apple is known for its build quality. You can call it over priced, but not a piece of shit. 56k? No. Wifi? Yes.

Oh wait, you need apps that the iphone has built in that work very well? wow.

I can't wait for the 3G/GPS model to come out--right now not having gps is a pain sometimes. EDGE isn't really that bad though, a lot less so than one would expect

the beauty of the windows mobile platform over the iphone's interface is that things are constantly being dev'ed for it so you can pick and choose what you like the best.

^^ Yes and the fact that i can type on my smartphone while driving w/o even looking at the screen. It's easy to member the qwerty keys or the numberic keypad and not have to look at the screen. Whereas on an iphone/completely touch device you have to be looking at the screen the entire time to make sure you hit the right spots. I hope we don't get an influx of crashes due to people trying to text on thier iphones while driving. I can see the headlines, "teen fatalities on the rise due to improper iphone use while driving."

I've been trying out "viigo" as a free rss reader. You say you use google reader? Isn't that through a browser? I want an application that just brings up all my feeds right away w/o having to deal with a browser.
