I fergot all about Diesel and Cricket. Why the hell would you name a black lab Cricket?

Last time I saw Diesel was when Ed and Matt came by the house in the yarrrcharger. Diesel was tryin' to hump Loki (Frac's yellow lab).

Diesel is a goddam queer.

I didn't know you guys had a yellow lab...

Loki isn't a HUGE lab like Diesel is. So he kinda gets humped by the bigger dogs pretty often, actually.

Wouldn't that actually be a diesel motor, not a "diesel like" gasoline motor? I mean old Rudolph made a compression ignition motor, not #2 fuel oil. It's just a diesel that burns gasoline?

That's actually highly debatable. For one, the mixture supposedly burns VERY quickly, and almost all of it burns simultaneously in an HCCI engine. It's actually a better approximation of the Otto cycle than even a spark-ignition engine because of its rapid pressure increase in the cylinder.

Also, all practical diesels inject fuel over an elapsed time (even if it's a very short time), and the Diesel cycle is modeled as a constant-pressure cycle, meaning that, while the fuel is spontaneously ignited much easier than, say, gasoline, it burns at a slower, more controlled rate and produces a more uniform pressure which remains more or less constant through the power stroke of the cycle.

No practical engine falls 100% under either reciprocating internal-combustion cycle, Otto or Diesel. There are some hard lines of definition, such as spontaneous or spark ignition, but there are a good number of gray areas, and even fuels which can be run in either engine under certain circumstances (take kerosene for example; you can run it in a properly warmed-up Otto-cycle engine, and it runs wonderfully in Diesel-cycle engines in the winter and fairly well in the summer).

^That looks like a sixer, but I can't tell exactly what...

Here's one of my all-time favorite diesels, an Americana blast from the past...GM's Electromotive Division (EMD) E-type locomotive. The one shown is an E-8, which has about 2250 horsepower (from two EMD 567 Series engines; That's 567 cubic inches per cylinder)

I understand their principles and how their design works, but what I want to know is this: What kind of tires do you use on a mine-proof vehicle? Are they foam-filled? I'm pretty sure not solid, as they would be unbelievably heavy.

Sure, why not? I have no doubt that you can buy a train if you have the money. As far as running it on a track...well, I'd be willing to bet that you can lease track timeslots from one of the major railroads. And don't forget that there are smaller regional railroads that you could contact. Damn, Ivan, you've piqued my curiosity. Now I'm going to have to research this a little deeper.

Goddam geek streak in me...

i believe they are armored (well thicker anyway) plus slime, but that's it. the vehicle is made to survive a blast, not be invincible.

Evidently, CSX doesn't list anything about track timeslots or anything, but there are several other short line options in the area. There's also Norfolk Southern, and I haven't looked on their website. But that will have to wait till I get back to Bath. I'm totally interested in finding out more.

Rex (my friend who runs Happy Jap's): his father used to be a mechanic for a train line way back in the day (guy is a total diesel fanatic). I bet he'd have more info. Rex has a big -ass piston and rod assembly from one of those engines.

I know you can buy jets and subs, so I wouldn't think a train would be a problem to buy. You've gotta be flush, of course.

I'm just trying to figure out how you can travel the rails with what you buy. But the major railroads don't seem to have any information on leasing trackage timeslots or anything.

Money ain't the question right now (though why it's not is beyond me; I have shit for money)...

But of course...we're just talking theoretically here. Hell, I'd love to go cross-country on a train I owned.

Of course, while we're talking about pipe dreams, I want to own a Douglas DC-3, at least 4 or 5 different Volkswagens (the old ones), a Kenworth big rig, and I want to have my own 5000 square foot shop with every tool imaginable.

I want a music studio, a study with room for a bajillion books, and a small shop where I can build my model airplanes.

And I want a tube amp hi fi system.

Yeah, owning a Gooney ranks on up there. Big time. I've always wanted one.

As a matter of fact, the sound of twin Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp radial engines ranks up there with the sound of a diesel engine and enthusiastic cries of "Oh God yes"

this is a diesel somebody needs to buy! it's Raleigh's old truck. It was sold back in '99 or so to wendell. they kept it until recently and sold it to another town. driving the back is a fucking blast. you can charge people to drive the back and they'll keep coming back.

Damn, I love the cabover Macks. Like to double-clutch much, Brian?

Back when I was 18, I drove a 10-wheeler cabover like that with the 237 Maxidyne engine. Has that one got the reverse in the duplex box so you can run thru all 5 gears in reverse?
