I'm new enough to still be ignorant of all the reasons for threads being locked, and I'm not even sure this is the right place for this thread, but why did the three Salisbury/Guth threads get locked? I don't agree with what they were saying, but it seems a little censor-ish to lock them because I didn't really ever see any directed threats or anything like that? Just curious more than anything........

Mods make this site great. Imagine what would happen if there were lotsa users and no mods.

We're better off with lesser users and more mods.

What's up with this, anyways? It seems like the only person immune from suspension is the person who needs it the most.

I've always viewed the Soap Box as semi-SFW, but salisburyboy really goes over the line.

Just keep the 4 letter words out of the subjects of the message. The idea is for any new user to have to click 3-4 times before he/she gets offended "

Exactly. At least at my place of work, salisburyboy's thread titles are much, much more offensive than any four letter words.

wow, my sarcasm meter flew off the charts with that one

if you, the users, had any self control there wouldnt be the need for so many moderators
just be glad this isnt monitored like Pack Pride.

the very short version of the answer is:

Quote :
"Salisbury is being serious; the others aren't."

he's been dealt with and a compromise has been made to avoid censoring him out completely, but to keep him from completely trashing the forum with his inane bullshit.

that's not good enough for guth, so in protest, from time to time, he likes to flood the soap box with threads mocking salisburyboy. since he knows not to do it, know exactly what happens every time he does it, and is intentionally disrupting the forum and being a general pain in the ass, I just suspend him every time he does it.

He knows fully well that he'll be suspended, but that's part of his game. When I suspend him, he sometimes bitches about why he gets suspended for posting the same thing as salisburyboy, but it's one of those deals where if he has to ask, I'll never be able to explain it to him in a matter he'll find satisfactory.

The Cheese Wars took place a while back as the result of salisburyboy expanding his sphere of bullshit. Even before the official restrictions were put in place, he tended to keep his rambling to his own threads, which, while numerous, were at least clearly labeled as crazy talk by the mere presence of his name. One day, though, someone else (I don't remember who) posted a legitimate topic about education, and salisburyboy poked his head in and said something about how the problem with education was Jews.

This was more than many of us were going to stand for. Salisburyboy didn't have many friends to begin with, and plenty of people who thought Soap Box would be better off without his threads. But going into legit threads was over the line.

Someone -- I think it was the late Woodfoot -- had the idea to start spamming the board in general and salisbury's threads in particular with cheese references. Basically the idea was to replace the word "Jews" with "cheese" to demonstrate how preposterous it all was.

Eventually this expanded from simply reposting salisburyboy-esque comments laced with cheese to a variety of cheese-based puns and images. I take pride in originating "Praise Cheesus, Cheesus saves" myself.

Over the course of a week or two things got out of hand, the board was flooded with cheese, and certain people left the site for good, including my old archnemesis, MathFreak. The demand for moderation grew louder, as our original moderator was always absent, and theDuke866 was installed. He cleared out the cheese stuff and placed salisburyboy under restrictions.

sorry. thats hardly original to you. i was clowning on that back in '96, and i know i stole it from someone else.

perhaps you were the first to bring it to TWW in that particular context, so I'll support your bid for a cookie based on quickness

While staring at Novicane's response ^^^ I saw Str8's from the bottom of my eye and half expected it to be laced with the word cheese all over the place. This expectation was a consequence of reading "The Wolf Web Presents: A History of Cheese-ing"
