Aight, this engine has been a pain in my ass for months now.
First of all, junkyard engine, stuck in new bearings, oil pump and ran it, very low oil pressure, checked everything out, installed a high volume pump, same problem.
Finally got around to tearing it down yesterday, it had bad cam bearings but the new mains and rods still looked ok, and it was getting no oil to the top side on the passenger side. Just heard back from the machine shop and there was nothing in the oil passages and it looked ok, so that leaves one thing, the distrbutor not sealing well in the oil galley and its blowing back into the sump.
I checked two other distributors I had, and a new one, same size as the one I had in there, and barely smaller than the block hole, which is correct since some has to leak by to oil the distributor gear. That still doesn't solve my problem though, why the hell am I not getting the oil I need there?
Would two badly worn cam bearings be enough to cause that? If so then why was the driver side of the engine getting plenty of oil up top?
I have built a lot of SBC's but I have never come across something like this before. 8/24/2007 2:07:54 PM |

1. yeah, i've seen/heard of cam bearings causing a decent drop in pressure.
2. isn't the pcv on the passenger side? might be something to consider... otherwise, that's got me kinda stumped too if the galleys are clean. did you mic. the dizzy shaft compared to the new one? positive it's not slightly tweaked anywhere, etc.? how are you sure it's not getting oil up there? dry under the valve cover or what? 8/24/2007 3:12:56 PM |

^ everything on that side was bone dry, lifters wouldnt even pump up, much less push it up the rods
other side was fine though, even with 5-7psi at idle warm
just doesnt make an damn sense, without any crack or obstructions, it has to be the shaft not sealing properly, but i was just on the phone with a gm performance rep for half an hour and pretty much ruled that out, so i guess it has to be the cam bearings, i'm gonna leave the intake and valve covers off when i get it back in, and prime it and check everything this time, with all this work, it should shoot oil halfway to the beach out of the rockers 8/24/2007 4:04:48 PM |

yeah first thing i checked, put a manual guage on there, it was obviously not getting any oil to the top end on one side
kinda makes sense now that i realize how bad the rear cam bearing was, even a high volume pump couldn't keep up with that, the main oil hole comes up on the drivers side, to all the lifters, then to the cam bearings, then to the passenger side, it was dumping too much out of the cam bearing to even get over there
besides a cam bearing walking out of place, i've never seen one dump enough oil from wear to do this8/25/2007 10:44:19 AM |

slapped the cam and crank in tonight, waitin on dirty dan to get in town to borrow his piston ring compressor, left mine at the lake after i did the boat motor
got the block cleaned, decked, and honed pistons cleaned and checked, new rings, crankshaft, and camshaft, bearings, etc. ready to build the bottom end tomorrow
hopefully i'll have the heads back monday, finish building it, drop it in, and have it running by tuesday morning, along with all the other random shit we need to fix to get this truck to colorado on wednesday 8/25/2007 8:15:38 PM |

it fired up on the first try and idled nicely. there is a sound coming from somewhere, but it's not the engine. we're thinking it's in the exhaust (cat's been gutted). other than that it runs great as far as i know, didn't go on the test drive, i crashed out hard. 8/28/2007 3:07:07 PM |

is the inspection plate on it. mayhave broken or stripped teeth off the bendix or flywheel. just a thought 8/28/2007 3:28:27 PM |

why would that cause a noise when it's running? damn you post some stupid shit. 8/28/2007 3:40:09 PM |
slowblack96 All American 4999 Posts user info edit post |
well cause depending on the size of the chunk(if it is that) the flywheel will hit it sometimes during dif vibrations.
only thought of it cause i did the same thing with my old c10. took the plate down and well what do you know there was a peice of a flywheel. on thing is. it only made the noise at idle and taking left turns. i myself thought that it was some shit in the exhaust. but it wasnt. 8/28/2007 4:05:46 PM |

god damn slowback is a retard, it was the heat sheild on the cat
why the hell would it have broken teeth on the flywhell i just inspected and installed dumbass
its running great, has nasty sounding lope at idle with the new cam, and will sound better whenever he puts a good exhuast system on it
only problem today is that it was running a little hot, new thermostat was screwed up, opening at 220 instead of 190, other wise, it went perfect, sits right on 60 psi of oil pressure all the time, the relief pressure 8/28/2007 6:02:30 PM |

unlike you, most people can identify the difference between a mechanical interference and a rattle, and anything in the bellhousing makes a very distinct noise, any idiot should be able to immediately identify it, but apparently not you

is that why it was posted that "there is something rattling maybe in the exhaust" instead of automaticly identifying it and solving the problem as soon as you heard it.8/28/2007 6:59:48 PM |

took a few minutes to find exactly what was rattling and wedge something in there, long after Jeepman went to bed but i knew from the sound what it was, but listened to the engine anyway in various places on the pan and block to see if there were any other unusual noises while i was under there, when all you can hear is the oil pump gears and bypass spraying back into the pan, no knocking or even clicking, that is a tight damn smooth running engine8/28/2007 7:21:03 PM |
