Apple event tomorrow, as you all probably already know. Here's my wishlist for the new iPod:
-Full screen, touch interface ala iPhone (no more scroll wheel??!?) -Flash memory (32GB at least, plz) -Wifi (Some definite advantages to this for Apple: people buying iTunes directly from the iPod=more impulse buys) -All new interface w/CoverFlow
If it does have Wifi, I just hope it comes packin' Safari. I want a pocket web-access device that doesn't suck (ie is a phone) damnit!
If it's got all of these, I'm buying one right away and having it engraved with "Steve Jobs is my daddy" on the back. For every 1 of these features that is missing, it will take me approximately 1 minute longer to pull the trigger. 9/4/2007 2:36:01 PM |

I think Safari is plenty fine for most applications, Stein. We don't all need to be able to browse the web from a terminal line.
The scroll wheel might be 'virtual' in this iteration? 9/4/2007 2:44:33 PM |

safari on apple products is great and on an iPhone it's by far the best browser out that I've ever used on a handheld device. Now, the version they rushed to put out for PC's sucked ass from my understanding.9/4/2007 2:45:17 PM |

whatever overcomplicated browser the ubernerds are all using nowadays, undoubtedly. Cuz, you know, Safari isn't 'powerful' enough.
SkankinMonky: I guess you've got a point, especially if it's running OSX redux like the iPhone. Come to think of it, that's a pretty exciting prospect as far as homebrew goes (emulators, etc etc). 9/4/2007 3:12:05 PM |

This is most likely what I've been waiting for for over a year when it comes to why I've been putting off buying an ipod. For me it will come down to price. If I can get an iphone minus the phone with 16 or 32 GB of flash for around $300 I'll bite. Any more than that and I'll start to feel silly spending that much money and not getting an iphone. Assuming that's the only difference.
They list Increased storage capacity as a feature for the new nano. If I can get 16GB on that for around $200 that will be awfully tempting. Somehow I have my doubts.
Bottom line is, I'm pretty sure I'll finally be getting an ipod after tomorrow. I'm still interested to see the specifics on the pricing and features to figure out which one.] 9/4/2007 3:25:58 PM |

I'd suggest IE over Safari, that's for certain. At least the user base for IE is large enough that people know how to work around its bizarre quirks.
But really anything that renders pages even remotely close to how they're supposed to be rendered would be a step up from Safari. It's a terrible browser, regardless of whether you're using Windows or OSX.
I mean, it renders quickly, yeah. But if it took like half a second longer to actually render things in some way fathomable to the human mind, that'd be far better.9/4/2007 4:16:36 PM |

A touchscreen over a damn click wheel is almost guaranteed in my opinion. The hardware has already been developed with the iPhone and I see no reason why they would do it any other way.

I have serious doubts that the new iPod will essentially be an iPhone minus the phone part. I think Apple is going to want to keep the iPod and iPhone as 2 distinct products, and not have them competing against each other. Expect a touch wheel interface similar to the previous models, more storage, and some minor aesthetic improvements.

Any number of websites. Look, it's a crappy browser, but if it does enough for you to conduct your online business, then by all means use it. Since there's really no other product for an Apple handheld device to use, it's pretty much either shitty Safari or nothing, and in that case, yes, Safari is much better.

It seems as though every "expert", "insider" and rumor mill (all great sources, by the way) are saying that Apple is going to not only completely change the physical interface of their flagship device, but also the graphical interface and change the type of storage for the worse (the whole "less space" thing) - all at once!
Geez, I don't know why that would be considered a little outlandish 9/4/2007 6:23:12 PM |

flash>hdd
the one thing that keeps me from buying an ipod. (though i have a nano for the wife).
i prefer a smaller physical size, faster load times, transfer times, and less risk for damage over a large heavy hdd based player anyday.
flash based 32gb ipod ftw
btw, thinksecret hardly ever gets it wrong: http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0709preipod.html
Quote : | "Touch-screen iPod to take center stage September 4, 2007 - Apple will at last unveil a touch-screen iPod with a 3.5-inch display at its media event Wednesday, sources have confirmed, some 20 months after Think Secret first broke word of the device's development.
The new iPod will feature similar dimensions to Apple's iPhone with which it will share the same display, but sources except the iPod to continue to sport a hard drive in place of Flash memory. Solid state media commands a roughly 15-fold price premium per gigabyte over a 1.8-inch hard drive, which is now available in substantial quantities at capacities up to 120GB.
The rumormill has been ripe with other feature speculation surrounding the new iPod, some more far-fetched than others. While it is possible the new iPod will be the first to pack some sort of wireless capability, suggestions of digital radio playback should be taken with a grain of salt.
Apple's new iPod nano, meanwhile, will gain much of the same functionality as Apple's current 5.5G iPod, including video playback and a higher resolution 320x240 pixel display. The nano will remain Flash-based, with capacities expected to top out at 12GB or 16GB, in keeping with rival product offerings.
The iPod nano is also expected to feature the first substantial improvement to the iPod's traditional interface. Rumored to have been in development for nearly two years, the click-wheel based interface will pack plenty of animation and other visual flair, including CoverFlow browsing if leaked videos of the interface--screenshots of which are offered below--are true to the final form.
Apple may take advantage of tomorrow's media event to make other announcements, including new iPod accessories. Think Secret sources recently said they believe the iPod Hi-Fi speaker system will be eliminated from Apple's product line-up in the near future.
In addition, rumors that Apple will make an announcement regarding the Beatles catalog have circulated for some time and may come to a head tomorrow. The rumors have been partially fueled by content selections in the leaked iPod interface videos and also by the recent addition of John Lennon's solo work to iTunes." |

The one website I went to w/my iPhone that it didn't render quite right was http://www.jeep.com (I saw a hideous looking wrangler parked in front of Waraji, and wanted to read up on it till my friend got there). It didn't handle frames/scrolling perfectly. That said, the device/implementation is leaps and bounds better than ANY other mobile device has come close to. I'm buying another one for my girlfriend tomorrow... Ahmet
PS: The fact that I may choose to browse on the iPhone when my laptop is on the desk next to me, says a lot about it's usability. 9/4/2007 9:18:27 PM |

I use Safari as my main browser where possible (I use Linux at work and have to use FireFox when there) and never really have any problems. In general I have found it to be extremely fast and reliable and have found that the browsing experience with it is better than many other browsers.

We're essentially talking about a widescreen, touchscreen iPod, and now that Apple has suckered ppl w/ the phones, it's time for those happy with their current phone to get a similar device that doesn't talk.
