Hah, my parents loose maybe half an hour to an hour a year because of storms. Usually it only goes out for a few minutes during a really really nasty storm. Simply being cloudy is not enough to block a properly aligned dish despite what those oh-so-objective TWC ads tell you.
Now when my cable goes out it goes out for at least an hour at a time. That maybe only happens 3-4 times a year, but it certainly ads up to more missed access. Not to mention that when my cable goes out I lose phone, internet AND tv.

Where do these myths come from, and how do people like you spread them?
I simply dont understand.
Maybe you meant to say
Quote : | "just pray it doesn't storm or get really cloudy. you dont aim it at a solid object, such as a tree

bullshit. we've got one of the oval shaped directv dishes. Clear view of the sky(no trees or anything) and was professionally installed with 100% satellite signal. We can tell when a storm is coming because the damn thing goes out when it's really cloudy. We can be in the middle of a monsoon and it will work but let it sprinkle just a little and you can forget watching anything. 9/5/2007 6:34:33 PM |

the only time my dishnetwork dish has ever gone out was when the yard maintance crew hit it with a lawn mower.
i use dishnetwork, but the technology used is still the same (circular lnb).
do you live in NC? 9/5/2007 6:36:59 PM |

yeah, it's riegelwood(just outside of wilmington). When TWC makes it there, I'm gonna invite everybody for some target practice. 9/5/2007 6:39:27 PM |

are you using rg6 from the satellite dish to the reciever?
ive never had ANY problems that were not solid object related.
Example : One time a tree fell on my dish during an ice storm. 9/5/2007 6:42:19 PM |

^^ Your experience is not typical and may be due to either misaligned dish or faulty equipment. The signal meter does not tell you if your dish is properly aligned, just that it is aligned enough to get a clear signal. There is still a somewhat large range in which the dish will report 100% signal during clear skies. During cloudy or rainy weather this range shrinks considerably and the solid-angle that will result in "100%" signal is much smaller. I would suggest they contact DirectTV service as the situation you describe is not something they HAVE to deal with and can be fixed. 9/5/2007 6:42:45 PM |

We've had directv technician come out before and looked at it and they said it was perfect. It's pointed exactly where it should be and there are no obstructions since be basically live in a big area with no treas for a good distance. We were also told that you just have to deal with these things when using satellites. And it isn't an isolated incident because I know a bunch of people who have the same problems with their satellites, especially people with the newer ones. Hell, even the technician said they get these calls all the time. We upgraded from the original receiver/round dish that we bought to the newer receiver and oval dish but it's still the same. 9/5/2007 7:11:15 PM |

^^ That use to happen to me, and they couldn't ever find anything wrong. I went outside to the junction box on the side of the house and jiggled the cables in there, and it hasn't happened in a long while. 9/5/2007 8:24:39 PM |
