i work retail and i'm pretty good at my job. the thing is every few months i get some guy in who "manages " a "sorta fortune 500" company that's doing some " expansion" , they hand me a card they made at home and ask for my number. i know part of me is hoping one day someone who has a decent company will approach me like that, but until then i'd rather not work pyramid schemes, should i just be like "wow sweet business card *rip toss in trash"? and i'd hate to say i not interested until i see what the deal is but by the time i start smellin the bullshit they are like "well give me your #" how do u guys deal with this type stuff? 9/11/2007 3:48:57 AM |

Just say something like you're really too busy with school to take on anything else.
Or ask them for a website you can check out first before you give them contact info. 9/11/2007 3:51:24 AM |

I HATE quixstar people... they are freaking idiots... and I learned to recognize them working at BB and would get them thrown out for soliciting...
any time somebody is loitering and just overly interested in you and your "asperations" it's pretty much guaranteed that they are quixstar... and I usually just asked them immediatly or told them that I'm not interested in quixstar... they run away like dogs with their tails between their legs 9/11/2007 7:26:29 AM |

One of those guys tried to hit me up on a plane last year and I gave him "my" business card and told him to call. The card belonged to someone that pissed me off b/c he wasted about an hour of my time earlier in the week with some bs.9/11/2007 9:04:50 AM |

I doubt it. I posted a job offer on here a few months ago for a fortune 500 company, but I'd never walk up to random people in stores trying to pick up new employees.9/11/2007 9:34:20 AM |

Ugh I used to work in the only copy shop in Boone and would get hit up multiple times a week.
You think they would figure out that I'm copying the same damn flyers and promo materials for all the other Quix-tards in the area.

tell them you wish to schedule a business lunch to discuss their job offer, and then stand them up. When they call asking where you are, tell them that you only wasted their time in retaliation for them wasting your shopping time earlier. 9/11/2007 10:45:27 AM |

If they won't say exactly what they do, and they want you to come to a night time meeting in a suit you know what it is. I just tell them that i have had experience with companies that do marketing for retail chains and have found that its not exactly the path for me. Then I say fuck off 9/11/2007 11:10:33 AM |

Does Quixtar have any type of competitor that does the same type of pyramid scheme? It would be kind of funny to tell the Quixtar person you work for their competitor and try and get them to sign up for your thing. 9/12/2007 11:38:30 AM |

If someone hands you a business card, you should at least take their business card and take a look at it before you decide to trash it. Sometimes management with legitimate companies will try to recruit talent if they encounter someone who is good at sales or offers phenomenal service. 9/12/2007 4:31:58 PM |

Nah, anyone who comes up and offers you crap while you're shopping or eating dinner is full of crap. But if you're working and a customer or someone who has been standing near by offers you up a card, it's not always crap. 9/12/2007 5:09:29 PM |

^^ when I was working at Gap (for 3 months in HS while a store opened before the oddballs started showing up) I was running the cash register and a Best Buy manager liked how I was pitching the add-ons and offered me a job, which was awesome b/c I was ready to get the hell out of working for Gap and Best Buy is a REALLY cool place to work for a high school kid...
so it does happen, but that was retail to retail... I mean I COULD see somebody spotting a real sales job for a retail sales person, but I wouldn't be nearly as creepy about it as the quixstar people... they are just weird... 9/12/2007 7:58:52 PM |

^^Yeah. My husband runs a Geek Squad precinct and he has turned a number of daily outings into scouting opportunities because someone that helped us had a certain oomph.
He also has a stack of business cards from customers who have tried to steal him away from his job. I guess if your job has you out there interacting with the public, unless you absolutely suck at your job, you'll probably end up with a number of alternate job prospects.

You get all kinds of people in retail and the jobs out there in retail aren't all bad.
While a cashier or someone on the floor may be some kid making $8/hr, management, techs, and installers must have certain qualifications and make considerably more.
I certainly do not have any complaints. My husband graduated with his degrees in math and physics and went to work at Best Buy for the summer. He ended up loving it and now runs a Geek Squad. He makes enough for us to afford to build a house in a nice neighborhood and live comfortably on his salary alone. 9/13/2007 8:40:25 AM |
