I haven't been fishing in years but I'd love to do it again. So how do the tournaments work? Yeah there is a lot of skill involved in fishing but isn't a big part of it luck? So are the winners the guys who get the most/biggest fish?

^^I'm sure it's gonna be more of a headache than any recreational fishing...

but I'm looking forward to it

plus if I can pad my outdoor resume with some wins it will help me out down the road since I am looking to start guiding fishing trips along with the hunts I do

^yeah, well it's luck and skill...
you gota know where the fish are, not just the fish, but the big ones... which can be tricky in the ocean... but every offshore fisherman knows where the rocks, wrecks, hard bottoms, and breaks are... which is usually where the fish are. It's just knowing which ones have been producing your winning fish.

over the last couple weekends, tournaments have been won with fish in the 40 pound range, but earlier in the summer (esp in NC) a 25 pound fish can win it... when we fish the gulf coast(Fl,AL, LA, TX) it'll probably in the 50-60 pound range that wins the money

it helps to have a fast boat, some of our trips can be a 200+ mile run depending on where the weigh in is located

^^I guess it's nice to not pay to fish anymore

^ ehhh, what do you mean?

usually the most breakers are in the inlet at low tide with some wind

unless it's blowing up pretty good, then you can have some big waves...

well, an exception is the Cape Lookout Shoals about 10 miles out of Beaufort Inlet... I've seen the depthfinder go from 70' to 10' in a hundred yards! and yeah, there are some monster waves there

So I guess you have to do a lot of research before hand of the area you are fishing at then.

well, you can go online and look at current temperature charts to see where the temp breaks are (usually fish are there)

but most of the "structure" that holds fish is common knowledge among the people that fish the area

it's all marked on charts, maps, and even on the internet

plus we don't fish the bluewater usually (gulf stream) so all you really need to know is what spots have the big fish

Something on the side. Sometimes the guys who do one every weekend, own their own ride, and are already rich do it as a full-time gig.

Not to belittle this, but it's basically an "anyone can join" type of thing and you just need to either A)own a big enough boat and have the money or B)know someone.

It's still really cool and I'll prally dabble in it a bit when I can in the future, but it's not like he's become Mark Sosin or anything.

No offense at all pwr, it's just that most of these cats are clueless.

slack off a lot to hunt and fish, stumble your way into a career!

on the side, even my captain has a job.. well, he owns a business lol

my regular job allows me the time to go out and do this, plus the other things I do are all on the side also, so it works out

well, yeah... but we're in the pro division, everythings pretty much sponsored... boat, reels, clothes, etc

I'd compare it to racing really... know people and have sponsors, or have enough money to do it on your own

I'm not expecting to become famous or anything, it's just a way to help build my resume, since most of my career involves the outdoors

yeah, it's a different world out there, the money involved in it is overwhelming

"jumping the breakers" - there are places where breakers form from the water getting really shallow, really quick (as you mentioned). There is a technique for larger boats with tons of power (2-4 engines) where you can hit the wave right and literally jump the breaker. Everyone else has to ride down to the end of the inlet, go around, then come back. Saves you tons of time, except in the event of missing the wave, catching the ground at full tilt and ripping a prop off.

congrats... my father in law won the ABKMT around 8-9 years ago... before he sold his boat, was a nice payday. A friend of the family's fishes in the ska stuff, boat is the Chevy II out of Snead's Ferry in Division I, he was on one of the fishing shows a while back, they were filming on his boat. my bro-in-law would kill to have the opportunity!

Can someone really make a living being a "professional" fisherman? I mean how much money do you think you'll bring in on avg from a tourney? Is this going to be your only job now?
