Sounds like shit is going down in Myanmar.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/09/27/myanmar.protests/index.html#cnnSTCText

We need to suit up and prepare for war. We know how much Bush likes democracy and freedom so surely we will want to invade to help the people in Myanmar like how invaded Iraq to help free the Iraqis from tyranny.

An invasion probably isn't necessary. Even the mongoloid circle-jerkers at the CIA could handle that coup under current conditions. Throw around a little money in the right places and at the very least we could replace the bloodthirsty junta with at least a regular dictator who won't pull shit like:

Quote :
"The 1988 uprising were triggered by economic hardship. In 1987, a former regime chief demonetized Burma's currency, wiping out the savings of millions, and introduced new bank notes that were divisible by the number nine simply because he considered the digit auspicious."

http://www.isn.ethz.ch/news/sw/details.cfm?id=18093

Sadly, we won't do it.

Internet access cut off in Myanmar...
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,298400,00.html

I know a lot of tdubbers who would be suited up and ready for anarchy if that happened here.

i don't kid myself about the 2nd amendment, but it could certainly help the free-burma movement right about now

Here is a golden opportunity to stay out of the fray.

If some private citizens want to go over there and fight on the side of freedom, more power to them.

But the US gov't should keep its hands off...and that means you Mr. CIA.

See, this is my problem with libertarianism

It requires us to say, "Oh, well, whatever" when horrible abuses of the basic human condition are being perpetrated by even the weakest of governments, which we could easily topple

Fuck that, I'd rather have oppressive speed limits and teen drinking laws than permit the god damned burmese junta to keep running things

Why is it that only the CIA is capable of putting money to the right people to help a coup? We are Americans, we are filthy rich compared to these countries. Grumpy, go start your own charity, buy some guns, raise some cash, and overthrow the bad people.

fox news has an AP report up about mutinies in several army units. conflicting reports about whether these units simply refused to leave their barracks or are actively defending the protesters from other army units. other reports of fierce gunfire give credence to the latter though, since i doubt the monks are heavily armed.

^you mean like us a couple hundred years ago when even armies only had basic weapons available?

I'm sure its even easier nowadays to match firepower - homemade vs. professional military

oh wait, even when it was only muskets and cannons we needed help... disregard

No countries in modern times through largely domestic efforts have gained independence or overthrown a government

^ Wait, I thought quite a few have. India didn't gain independence through non-domestic efforts, or maybe you mean something different by that?

I am annoyed with two aspects of this wrt the US:

1) the use of the term "Myanamar" in any context that isn't pure parody. It's like calling China "Mao-land."
2) the recent "freezing of assets" we undertook in response. Why weren't the generals' assets frozen already? What, they weren't just as despotic three weeks ago?

You can't just run around freezing the assets of despots or in the future despots will find somewhere else to stash all the money they are stealing. I like today's system; we get to freeze despotic assets when they fuck up, and these Burmese types have really fucked up.

That said, I would prefer if they never froze anyones assets barring the conviction for a U.S. or international crime.

you are stupid and do not know anything about history

hence why terrorist organizations have evolved as a means to counter political discontent.

Every time you get the CIA involved, the new leadership is worse then the old. The CIA and the US government does not put righteous people in power in foreign countries. They put the guy that will bend over and happily take the American cock up his ass regardless if its 'good for his people' or not.

Because the Chinese are going to happily sit by while we put troops in SE Asia.

I mean, they could go . . . oh wait, oppressing religion, thats their shtick.

If anything, at least the well bungled operation in Iraq had the theoretical benefit of increased control over world oil.
