okay, so i wanted to get a DVD recorder for my parents' television so that they could get rid of using VHS...they live out in podunk and only get standard over-the-air television (they can't get cable, and, to be honest, have no desire to pay for satellite as they really only watch network TV, and even then not so often)

also, i'd like to convert their VHS home movies to DVD for them, but i haven't done this in years, and then i use a pinnacle USB device to do it

okay, so they DON'T and WON'T have HD until it's mandatory in 2009, so the dvd recorder doesn't need to have an ATSC tuner, just an NTSC tuner...i picked up a toshiba the other day just to find out it didn't have any tuner at all, so maybe i'm confused as to what i need...will this product do what i want?

Analog-Only TVs should continue to work as before with cable and satellite TV services, gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and similar products."

Your best bet is to purchase a VHS/DVD Recorder, not just a standalone ... it makes the whole process MUCH easier and streamlined. Granted, they are a few more dollars, but worth it, imo.

From what I've heard, either the Panasonic DMR-ES30V or the Lite-On LVC-9006.

You can't go wrong with either choice, but do some research around, there might be something else these days.
