you should start by thinking about what you're going to use it for and what you want out of it, i.e. a small and light machine that you will carry with you everywhere you go? a desktop replacement with a widescreen display and a nice graphics card? Would you use tablet functionality? Do you want a rugged, high-end machine that will be solid for 3-4 years, or would you rather put half the money in a savings account and get a $1250 machine now and another $1250 machine in 1.5 - 2 years?

Depends on the type of laptop he wants. If he wants something mobile and light-weight to carry around everywhere, get a Lenovo Thinkpad.

I've said it many times but if you spend 2500$ on a laptop you will regret it (thats fucking more than my car costs).

1200$ish should be all that it takes to get something nice

If it was up to me, I'd spend about 1500 on a good decent laptop that I could do about anything with. Graphic design, web surf, email, etc. Then spend $1000 on a decent desktop computer.

My employer is buying the laptop for me. I would like to get cash and buy a new desktop and laptop like you guys have mentioned but I only have the option of getting one machine and it has to be for work use. If I get a desktop I have to leave it there.

I was thinking about getting an Alienware m9750. Any thoughts?

Btw I hate Macs, I motherfucking hate them. I use Macs at work on a daily basis and they suck. I hate OSX, I hate the way they look, I hate people who use Macs and swear they are better simply because they themselves are to stupid to use and troubleshoot Windows or Linux. I have been with MS since DOS and I am comfortable with WinXP pro.

And no I won't get a machine with Vista.

Not really, Alienware offers XP pro. Dell offers XP also if you look under Small Business.

Point is, your choices become much more limited if you want xp pre-installed at this point. If XP is important though, don't worry about it. Buy the machine you want then get an OEM copy of xp pro and throw it on.

Just... make sure there's XP drivers for whatever system you get first though.

but really, $2500 is too much on a laptop. Get something nice for half that.

Since money up to 2500 isn't a problem, it might seem like you should try to spend as much of that money as possible. The problem is that in addition to seeing horribly diminishing returns on price/performance above 1500 bucks in laptops, sometimes you corner yourself into buying things that aren't really good at being laptops. The question is: do you want to spend as much of this as possible on what is effectively a luggable desktop, or do you want to get the best possible lightweight laptop within that budget?

Do you realize that if you buy a bomb ass laptop AND come in $1000 under budget, your employer is bound to notice that and make note?

he's a moron for setting aside $2500 for every employee laptop anyway.

I'd look at this as an opportunity to score points with the boss.

unless you don't give a shit about the job.

Also, you never told us what this would be for? If this was for work purposes, then either your employer is a small company or they really don't like your IT admin. Get what you really need for work and keep it as that. While it's great to be able to use a company asset for personal gain, I wouldn't want the temptation of using a company's computer for personal reasons. And a lot of the time, companies will restrict access to your laptop so you may not even be able to install stuff.

Btw, Microsoft has announced recently that it will allow users with new computer with Vista to downgrade to XP
http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=9027

Also, MS has continued to sell new XP licenses for another 5 months

hell, a little looking around online and you can something better than nice for just over half of that. Gaming capable laptops can go as low as 1300 if you don't mind a small screen.
